Long>short delay, or short>long delay?

Post by goroth »

Delay stacking is fun.

I normally stack short delay times into longer, but have been trying out long into short.
I like em both.

Anyone have any preferences or delay stacking tricks?

Pretty sure I made a thread about this years ago, but I'm contributing #content.

As you know im all about long into short to get those sweeet hank marvin tones. Realistically tho im rarely running just two delays. Like i often run one 3:4 delay into some free time paralel thing on the time factor into some slap back. It's a lot of delay. All the taps! RIP piggy!

I have a "master" board that feeds everything, and then pedals that feed individual amps.

The amps each have their own delay - usually the Marshall gets something medium (which ends up being "shortish' with the compression effect of running delay into a gainy monster) and the Fender gets something longer than the master board.

The master board also has a RE-20 and a real Space Echo running it, so there's technically "stacked delays" in each unit with the multiheads.

My pedalboard costs approximately 191 Metal Zones.

some of my favorites:

pristine digital delay (short/medium) > darker analog delay (medium to long)

modulated digital (short/medium) > clean analog delay (long)

granular > granular > analog (for adding mass)

digital (short modulated) > granular > analog delay (heavy modulation)

plugins: tape delay (medium/long) > glitch/granular (for texture) > subtle vintage delay (additional character and rhythm)

I'm often running 3-4 plugin delays in series---patched/modular delay, some type of glitch or freeze, various multi-head emulators, and possibly Wires (AudioThing)

I have medium -> medium reverse -> medium modulated -> medium with reverb. Basically they're all around 400ms, fine-tuned to sound nicely together. But I don't use delays to delay, I just use them to get MOAR TOAN.

Slapback > modulation > long delay is my default.
Long>short is cool but I don't like the way most mod peds sound pre-slapback or post-long delay, so it just ends up like that.

Reverse delay > random mod delay > reverse delay is my favourite 'weird' sound. the short- or long-ness doesn't matter there because it's a fucking mess regardless.

I like long digilays into short analays, so that the analog crystal power envelops everything.

That being said, when I've been looking at long sound-on-sound'y delays, I'm imagining them at the end of the board.

i'm frighteningly linear. i arrange my dirt/fuzz in ascending order of insanity, try to arrange the modulation so the degree of offset rises along the chain, and always run short delay -> long delay so i can do <2 sec. quasi-loops on the RV-3 and then copy them as a long looper phrase with 10-12 iterations. i run my tremolo after the RV-3 so i can record volume pedal drones on the Boss and then make them into sequence-like staccato.

Long warm delay into a short digital (the latter one with high mix level) is my favorite when I want to get claustrophobic and resonant, otherwise i am pretty standard and go short-mid tempo delay into long analog. If i have pitch shifting or granular-like delays i always go with those before a pt2399-based one.
Long delay into long multitap is another combination I enjoy, but that's just for droning etc.

I don't normally run two delays on a board, but I'll fairly often add a very short little "slapback" type delay in a DAW to give a track some depth instead of a reverb, so I guess my answer is long -> short. But sometimes this is short->short.

I used to do the many delay thing but over the last few years I've found I prefer simple boards and "focussing on playing the guitar". I know, I know, I'll show myself out

i have only the RV-3 on the board now. i don't have the room for a second delay since i added more modulation and fuzz. i'll have a delay on the looping board for additional mischief when i put it together, or maybe one delay into each looper.

This is cheating, as you have a delay that does multihead stuff. And you gas for delays not seldomly.
