Let's talk about fuzz wahs and oscillating fuzzes

Post by VREEEEVROOOOOW »

If I'm buying any pedals next year it's going to be a fuzz wah and an oscillating fuzz. Or some monstrous hybrid. I'm currently leaning towards the Roland AD-50 and the MASF Thornoscillator. Other suggestions?

I'd especially appreciate suggestions for cheaper options.

Or, if the monstrous hybrid alluded to above exists, hit me with that.

Also, please note, I don't actually care about wahs, so it could just as well be some sort of envelope filter that does the trick, or whatever. Think The Jesus & Mary Chain and Merzbow, not IDK... Cream. But then add oscillating spazz outs.

For oscillation it's hard to beat the good ole fuzz factory. You can grab a vexter for cheap.
Have you ever played a fuzz into an envelope filter? That's also real fun and very nasty if desired :animal:

@adamajah I didn't know about the Vexter. Thanks a ton for the suggestion!

I don't want to get a fuzz and filter separate, because I'm kind of out of room on my pedalboard.

@alexsga Impressively, the look of the Danowah is the least dumb thing about it.

Are you sure a Roland AD-50 will fit? They occupy the better part of an LP's footprint.

I found the Rattle Crow could do a fair bit of Merzbow-esque sounds, from some point in the ~40 year discography.

Hah, yeah the AD-50 would have to be off the pedalboard probably. Thanks for the Rattle Crow suggestion! Didn't know about that one.

Wah before oscillating fuzz is cool tho. It's gotta be an all stock crybaby tho, can't have a buffer cause it fucks with the oscilloness

I think what I basically want for my guitar is what I have for my noise set up.

What I do is I send the output of the mixer to input 1, so a feedback loop. (This could be my guitar pedal chain instead of a no input mixer.) I then manually manipulate a low/high-pass filter of this sound, which goes via aux send into a distortion pedal, which returns the output to input 2. Then I also manipulate the low/high-pass filter of the distortion pedal, and then send that whole signal chain back into the distortion pedal with aux send, creating another feedback loop. The end result of this is roughly KWAHHQHKKHHRGQGYIHHWHXDTRWRYYXXXSKPQQRL. How do I do this with guitar pedals?

So basically you want to manipulate the hi/low pass filters in a feedback loop?
Slapping together a Pedal that does that via an Expression pedal is no big task. Alternatively, if you maybe already have some Multi-FX pedal or Moogerfoogers, etc. that support the Filter Control via Expression pedal just use that.
Then the chain would be Guitar -> Feedback looper input -> Distortion/Fuzz/Whatever in Loop + Exp. Controlled Filter pedal in Loop -> Feedback Looper out.
The easiest would be to put a Wah pedal in the FB Loop, but depending on the design, this could be contraproductive to the oscillations. Best would probably be just a Tonestack that is controlled via the Exp. Pedal, maybe with two transistor stages in the input/output to not cause any phase reversal. Alternatively, the Filter pedal could be placed after the Output of the Feedback looper, so you can control the tone of the oscillation itself.
If you're a DIY guy, here is a Schem that could work for you:

come to think of it, fuzz factory can sort of do an envelope filter sound but Id be hard pressed to dial it in right before a gig, I usually rely on it for a velcro gated fuzz if anything and experiment at home.

If you're into the Thornoscillator, you should take a look at The Great Destroyer by Dwarfcraft. Same sorta crazy noise bliss, but might be slightly cheaper and easier to get a hold of.

as far as fuzz/wahs go, i've never seen anything that beat the Foxx fuzz/wah with the flocked finish.

@Eivind Actually, The Great Destroyer is significantly more expensive than the Thornoscillator, and the latter isn't particularly difficult to come by either.

(Hmmm I was sure I posted this earlier. Maybe I posted in the wrong thread? Wrong forum? In an email to my work colleagues? Who knows.)

Wheres colorsound and snarling dog when you need them. And VOG VOX as well.

Walrus Kangra seems pretty cool. Fuzz filter than a wah but, I'm sure in the right settings you can get wah sounds.

The Walrus Kangra mostly just sounds like Donald Duck to me with the fuzz engaged.
