Time to get my Red Panda cherry popped. Particle or Tensor?

Post by frigid midget »

I got inspired to this idea after posting that I'm perfectly happy with my current board

I did mension I was open to suggestions for just one "fun"' pedal though. One that's capable of dragging me out of my comfort zone, without annoying me with just unmusical bleebs. No need for midi, menu diving, or dozens of controls and silly dip switches.

So red Panda seemed like the obvious candidate. I wanted an ehx 720, purely for the reverse 1/2 speed drones. But it seems like the Tensor does that too, and a LOT more. Both the Tensor and the Particle V2 seem to do stuff my Nemesis can't, and they still have pretty straight forward delay settings as well...

Just wondering though, maybe someone who's familiar with both the Nemesis and both those RP boxes might be able to help me out...
Which one has the least overlap with the Nemesis? The Nemesis does some serious tweakable reverse/pitch/lofi stuff as well, it just doesn't loop/chop/glitch/randomize...So I'm leaning more towards the Tensor at the moment. Does that makes sense? :idk:

Anything else I should look into, some other pedal I'm overlooking that ticks all the boxes? Maybe the Pladask Elektrisk Bakfram is worth the wait?

I've never had a tensor, this is just how i see it
what you've never had a tensor? you've obviously had a tensor. you had the particle and you had...????? the tensor? I thought

Yessss, which is quite dope in its own right, but I think they shot themselves in the foot by making 3 delays with extras in them (pitchy, reversy, etc)

If they'd only released the raster or tensor either one would be a hit, now I'm not even sure they make the raster anymore

edit: they make the raster.
Damn yeah, I forgot all about the raster

I guess that gives me three options than :/

It does seem to be bit weird to have so few pedals out, and make em all somewhat similar. I would assume they did the math though, that they make more money this way than with just one über pedal that combines the pitch shifting stuff with all the particle stuff and the loopy tape stuff of the Tensor. Might be a marketing thing too. Staying relevant and bringing out a new pedal every once in a while, instead of letting the hype fade out with one 6 year old pedal :idk:

Anyway, still leaning more towards the Tensor. Out of the three contenstants, the Tensor seems to do most tricks that my Nemesis can't do.

vidret summed it up very clearly.
I have owned both the RP pedals and never owned a Nemesis but looking at its features it has a lot more in common with the Particle 2 than with the Tensor - because the latter one it's basically a tape-looper.
If you want to stay in the looper realm and are interested also in the EHX 720 (or the more recent 1440) here's a list of the differences:
Both: half-speed, octave, reverse
Tensor: simple pitch shifting, half (or quarter) speed with no pitch shifting, octave and pitch shifting with no time stretch/compression, randomness dedicated knob, tape stop effects, momentary effects, alternate forward/reverse looping, 4s/8s of memory time
EHX 720: memorizes phrases, multiple memory slots, stereo, 720s of memory time, loop fadeout (and surely there's more)

In synthesis: if you want a straight looper go with the EHX, if you want something for short loops mangling or a pitch shifter go with the Tensor.

Also, I'm patiently waiting for the Raster V2, which is something they said they're working on, I think it would be a lot more useful to me than the Particle 2 for stable single pitch/freq shifting delays

Thanks, that kinda sums it up. I'm not into conventional looping, i.e. recording a riff or something and storing it for a live set...
So yeah, as far as weird looping and pitchy sound manipulation goes, the Tensor seems the winner here. Too bad they're too rare/popular for a good deal on the used market :/

Yeah, if you're in EU the typical price is around 250-260€ on the used market. Usually prices go up around Christmas, I suggest you take a look from February, when people get sick of their Christmas gifts

Excellent advice sir :excellent:

Edit: Tensor incoming. So much for the "patience until a post-Christmas deal comes along" plan  :)

I have both, I'd say go with the Tensor, but expect it to take time to bond with it. I hated mine at first and wanted to return it, but it eventually became my favorite pedal. At your feet you can do so much more even without extensions like 4 button switch/MIDI. It has 2 buttons and the left switch in NXT mode can be used for setting a tempo (sort of - not tap, but duration of hold). Functionality on the Tensor is through the roof...you can do SO much. Granted you can can do quite a bit with Particle as well, if you are looking for something different, go for the Tensor. Particle is great because it also covers regular delay duties and then some. I admittedly haven't gotten nearly as deep with my particle as I have with my Tensor, but I always recommend the Tensor. I really love that pedal.

Thanks, that sorta confirms what I thought.

And yeah, the wide range of different sounds and uses comes with a lurning curve...Which is the reason I've been hesistant about getting the Tensor, I've been putting it of for years now. I also typicall don't spend this much on a pedal, especially not on somewhat weirder 'fun' pedals. From what I gather though, even *if* the glitchy pitched loop mangeling won't really do it for me, the basic reverse/slow drony ambient possibilities shoud be very useable. Psyched! :!!!:
