Empress Echosystem Effects Loop (Hardware Insert)

Yo! Does anyone who has or has had an Empress Echosystem have less than stellar results from using the effects loop, or hardware insert as they call it in the manual? I like using the effects loop on my rubberneck, and have had good results using stuff like the digitech freqout in the loop of the Empress Reverb, but don't seem to quite be able to get the one on the Ecosystem to output decent sound, triggering is wonky, etc. Anyone else? Am I doing something wrong?
