Might as well ask here, seems like the right place. I’m looking for instrumental jazz stuff, more on the fusion/prog end, with guitar parts. (Most of the contemporary jazz I listen to are arranged around a pianist.)

On top of that, if the playing isn’t exactly virtuoso / extreme — looking for more things to personally learn to play, without going back to old jazz standards and trying to make them more fusion. Curious to see if anyone has recommendations.

Not sure exactly what you wanna hear, but, unfortunately, a lot of the guitarists I can think of off the top of my head display some degree of virtuosity.

That being said, I think maybe John McLaughlin's playing with Miles Davis (and with his own bands too), Allan Holdsworth with Soft Machine and Jeff Parker with Isotope 217 (among other projects) are all worth checkin' out. Hope that helps. Let me know if that's a good start. I can think of lots more stuff to steer you towards.

Al Di Meola was at his best when he used to play with Return To Forever (alongside with Chick Corea, Stanley Clarke and Lenny White). That's a jazz guitar style that I like a lot.

Thanks! I’m digging in. Some of this stuff (like Live - Evil) I haven’t heard before.

Bireli Lagrene - Inferno, Foreign Affairs
Bill Connors - Step It, Double Up, Assembler
Scott Henderson - all Tribal Tech
John Scofield - Electric Outlet through Flat Out
Andy Summers - Mysterious Barricades though The Last Dance Of Mr.X, plus 2 releases with Fripp.

It's quite a rabbit hole, albeit one of my favorite rabbit holes.

The album cover is a bit racy, so I'm tucking this one away in NSFW. The music is just as beautiful as the cover. :joy:

Can't remember how to post youtube videos directly but I've been enjoying mike westbrook's stuff quite alot lately. Particularly this album which is alot smoother than the fusion stuff I usually listen to
