I love how Japanese prog bands most of the time are the quintessential version of Prog but without losing the raw component.

This prog book I'm reading has got me trying to listen to ELP again because I figure if I read a chapter of history about a band I should at least listen to them a bit..

Yep I still hate ELP.

i can see why you don't enjoy them, i had the same opinion for a long time, then learned to enjoy some of their tunes - not lucky man, please no :idk:
Now i listen so the s/t and Tarkus once in a while, but i'm definitely more into less baroque/melodic prog stuff and more into the psych side of it (or hypermathy things).

In amongst what I listened to there was stuff I didn't hate. But I really could not get along with the WHOLE THING

I think tarkus is the only good record they made. I can never hate on greg lake and there is some fun early synth stuff. The only culturally significant thing they have made is love beach though

I love ELP as a concept - it’s an amazing idea that often fell short musically given how goddamned ridiculous they are. However IMHO they have only made a handful of good records and/or songs, which I have listed below. However those are so strong you can almost overlook the absolute cringe of their lesser works. The thing about ELP is that their good stuff is great and anything less than that is just kind of shit.

First album is a goddamned masterpiece - I have no beef with Lucky Man but it’s by far the weakest track on an otherwise flawless album. The Barbarian alone for that fuckin’ bass tone!! They came on so strong and steadily declined from there....

Tarkus (the song not the entire album)
Pictures at an Exhibition (ridiculous but overall great record)
Fanfare for the Common Man (classic tune)

Really and truly I find Trilogy to be “okay” and Brain Salad Surgery to be “almost okay” but in terms of prog records there are 250 better records out there I’d rather put on....
