Destroy Erase Improve just turned 25.

I fucking love this album and Meshuggah. This album still blows me away and it is unfathomable that it is now 25 years old. That's like back when I was a microraptor and first discovered Maiden - let's say Seventh Son. 1988. 25 years before the Stones released their first bloody single, and it was still five years before the Pulka Tulk Blues Band would even be formed. That music sounded old as hell. But DEI still sounds space age to me. And Future Breed Machine is still the reigning champ for greatest breakdown ever. And best usage of hockey shirts in metal.

What is there to discuss though? It's just a beast of an album, changed metal single-handedly. I can think of better albums in the same style but they all just channel DEI.
I should get better strings for my shredder guitar and put back the hummer in it so i can do some A# chugg

Discussion topics:
Where does this rank in your personal Meshuggah record rankings?
Future Breed Machine's best riff is the 10 seconds from 41-51 seconds and they spend the vast majority of the song not playing it! Probably because they like The Jazz.
Why does Meshuggah always put the best tracks on their record as the second or third?

Counterpoint: Suffer in Truth is one of the best tracks on DEI.
Sane is track 6 on Chaosphere. Though New Millenium is the shit, but still.
Spasm is track 8 on Nothing.
Pravus->Dancers to finish off Obzen - that's a big fucken one two punch.
Swarm -> Demiurge - maybe an even harder one two to finish off Koloss.
I'd say most bands put song 2 as the best song on the album. Song 1 is always fast and short, or in some way catchy/punchy. Song 2 is where they get you to think "daaaaammmmmn!".
I can't rank Meshuggah albums. All are the best. But DEI and Nothing are the two I've come back to most often I'd say.

It is... personally, one of the ones I listen to the least.
I thought they got better after this one. But it's still good and I'm jamming it today

Don’t want to hijack the thread, but I feel like it’s the perfect place to come out of the closet.
I’ve never listened to a Meshuggah album except Obzen and DEI (which I did listened to regularly a bunch of years ago), plus some songs here and there. And it’s not because I don’t like them, it’s just..that I never did it, don’t know why .
I feel like it’s time to remedy, where should I start?

Nothing and Catch-33 are my favourites because they're slower.
Chaosphere is great if you like fast shit. Violent Sleep of Reason is really good if you want to hear them sounding like a band vs. an impossible music machine of destruction.

Nothing is first in line for tonight's listening session.

YES!
This is really important. Like... really important.
Jam Nothing. With the volume at almost ear splitting levels. And don't stop until the opening 1,2 punch is over.
This is how I fell in love with Meshuggah, and I'll never forget the moment. Backing out of a driveway in Melbourne in Amy Leembruggen's shitbox car, where she paid more for the stereo than the car. And that riff begins. Djank djank. Dja dja dja buuuuuurrrrr, dja, dja dja dja buuuuurrrr, dja, dja dja dja buuuuuuurrrr dja, djank djank....
Just outta the one speaker.
And then the shit hits the fan and you just get it!. This isn't polyrhythmic. It's four on the floor, headbanging, get wasted with your buddies bullshit. In the best possible sense of the word. .
And when it ends and you're like holy fuck, Stengah is the best song ever, then Rational Gaze drops. And you're like "hallelujah, holy horse shit! WAAAAAAHHHHH! I was wrong, STENGAH IS DA BES!!!"
The drum tone is way better in the original (orange cover) but the guitar tone crushes in the remix (blue cover)

Amy, if you're stalking, thanks for keeping your priorities straight.
Also, Big G, what is it with you and timelines?

The other stuff is true too I guess. But this is the bit I can vouch for.

Forgot to Mention that Stengah was one of the recurring listenings while touring in the last years as our drummer has been obsessed by it.coldbrightsunlight wrote:All of this is true.goroth wrote:And then the shit hits the fan and you just get it!. Anyway if you picture a 30-something man with headphones headbanging silently while sitting on the couch you have a quite good representation of me right now.
Currently halfway of Glints Collide.

BTW general rule for me: polyrhythms that sound like even metric rhythms (or the contrary) are l the beeeeeeeeeestestest
