Slide suggestions?

Post by niftyprose »

Hello guys, have realized my stock Jim Dunlop slide is no longer doing it. It used to work well for me but I've started mostly fretting the sixth string and the JD is just too long.

My ideal would be: 19mm internal, concave shape (Les Paul profile), 45--50mm, pyrex. Given my slightly unusual tastes I'm going to get a bottlecutter and try making my own, but I'm guessing that someone out there makes something suitable off the shelf.

I 2nd. For glass slides they are great, my favorite tonebar is their brass&glass large model.
Personally I like ceramic slides and have a few different Dunlop models and have always wanted to try a few different brands like:

Thanks guys. I love the looks of the Silica Sound slides but they're not radiused, which is an issue for me. Anyone else?

My fave is the Dunlop Mudslide ceramic. I also have brass, glass, and chromed steel. Glass doesn’t sound strong enough and I don’t like the harsh shit with metal. I think the ceramic just sounds better.

(I used to be really serious about this stuff back when I played slide about half the time. My opinion formed then and has held.)

:thumb: Mudslide is my fave too, it's been my goto for almost 20 years.. I even have a mudslide tonebar which is sort'a neat but is't heavy enough for proper sustain on a steel... Although.. Mudslides are porcelain not ceramic, mood slides [I need to buy another.. I think someone nabbed mine at a session a while back..] are ceramic and have a grittier sound. I also have a Reverend Willy G porcelain slide which is like a thin walled version of a mudslide :thumb:

i was over the moon the other day, when i opened one of my guitar cases, looked in the storage compartment, and found not only the Mellowtone Hi-5 i'd forgotten i even had but my slide. let me explain: it's a bog-standard chromed-brass slide i got back around 1974, and is the only one i've ever really liked. i play(ed) slide on acoustic a lot, and glass and ceramic are too dull for that application. plus, it's like a natural part of my finger by now, kind of like the one piece of tubing sawn off a microphone stand that George Harrison used from the 70s to his death. i was SO chuffed when i saw it.

Hijacking the one slide thread but what finger do you guys use? I use the ring finger mostly but sometimes the middle finger to play some shapes more easily. I want to play with my pinky cause it is really hard for me to use for fingering but I only have a bulky slide so its not ideal

third (ring) finger, or pinky. if i'm doing a lot of switching back & forth from chording with my fingers to slide it goes on the pinky. if i'm playing primarily with the slide, it's on the ring finger, because that feels more 'in control' & precise.

It's been said Fred McDowell used to use his pinky when he played in open A and his ring finger when he played in open E. :idk:

(Mudslide is my favorite slide too, but I always seem to drop & break 'em. )

Ring finger.
The only slide I've ever broken was coricidin bottle slide replica.. moister gets trapped in them and they get slippery.. and sometime if you move you hand too fast thy go flying... into a mic stand base...

the Coricidin bottle always seemed not to be wide enough for all the strings for me. if you only ever play on the top 3-4 strings like Duane Allman (no disrespect intended) i guess it works, but if you're playing straight-up blues or faux pedal-steel licks you need more span than that.

i generally use the ring finger because i find it most comfortable and it still allows me to use the 1st/2d fingers for regular noting, which is essential for slide on acoustic. i have occasionally used the pinky, but i'm less accurate then because that finger is relatively weak.

i've never had a breakable slide that didn't get broken within 6 months, so i gave up on them.

I'm a huge fan of ceramic slides. I have few these brands:
Rocky Mountain:
https://rockymountainslides.com/
Star Singer Slides:
http://www.starsingerslides.com/

both highly recomanded. Though I like better the Rocky Mountain Tomichis, which have a very thick wall.
