It's nice to see someone say that. A teacher friend-ish person I know posted this big thing on social media about how no one asked a teacher what they think about going back to school and another friend (who works as an emergency room dr) ripped her apart saying no one asked him either. damn teacher union here is already fighting to go remote. I've got a 2nd grader and a 4th grader, they need some level of in-person and the schools here have a solid plan (it isn't perfect, but what is?) and I think they can pull it off safely, especially with the thresholds they set (though I'd pull my kids before they shut down if there was a sudden spike - their thresholds are rolling avgs so a spike would take days to shut things down).

personally I'd say americans should be entitled to a lot more than is currently offered.

It is insane to me that it's a genuine argument used against people that they are lazy and entitled in a the american death machine. Like people are honestly being pissy about a 600$ check for unemployment amid a pandemic that caused huge spikes in unemployment. The lack of solidarity in america is at such a crazy level it boggles my mind. How can a country that puts so much stock in patriotism simultaneously wish death upon all of their neighbours?

Sending kids to school is a risk for teachers, obviously they should feel like they should have a say in this decision. I don't see how that is a werid, lazy or entitled reaction

^ Yeah, I'm with you there..
My mother is at fairly high risk given her age, as are most of her colleagues, and I'd be majorly pissed off if she was forced back to face-to-face lessons amidst a situation anything like what's going on in the U.S. right now. She's also worked a LOT of unpaid overtime (as are a lot of teachers right now) trying to get remote learning implemented as well as possible. I don't see how schools closing and re-opening every few weeks because your government has given up on any kind of elimination strategy is any good for education outcomes.

So, on the real I need a more comfortable mask now. Anyone have any suggestions? I want a really good one, don't give a shit about the cost but it has to be semi breathable. The one I have now from RZ Masks is great but if I'm in there for 7 plus hours a day, I'm going to have a pounding head ache. I did in Colorado at least. Suggestions would be appreciated by those already working and out there! :)

I mean, Colorado is 6,000ft higher in elevation compared to KCMO.

That's true. I have really bad sinus issues as well that make it difficult. I get by however. I also have sleep apnea, which for whatever reason makes it harder with certain masks. I don't know why. Doctors have told me to avoid these masks in the past because of that but I have one, so I'm wearing it. The elevation definitely made a difference. My fucking head still hurts a bit but I'm on prednisone now for my sinuses. The mountains really pissed them off.

We're going crazy trying to figure out what to do with our kids. Our older kid's school decided at the last minute to go remote after planning for a hybrid thing. Our younger kid's school decided they'd be in-person 3 days a week without any plan for what the kids will be doing the other 2 days, which means other parents will be forced to find risky makeshift childcare for that time.
There's a new outdoor school opening at a summer camp that we're considering for the older. It seems smart and low-risk but we're in New England so it'll be pretty brutal in January.
These kids are just forever trying to kill each other and we need them out of the house sometimes. I totally get that teachers don't want to take any risks but we're also losing our minds.

We are sending our kids to school. We will be watching the data/numbers and keeping our ears open for the anecdotal stories about family members of kids in our kids' classes getting positive. People being UBER sketchy keeping everything quiet lately about what they do/where they go/who they see/and status of their health. We plan to yank the kids WAY before the school shuts down, but locally summer camps ran without incident so we are hopeful that school can manage too...plus our kids need to get out and need to see their peers.

As for teachers, I've never been so angry at the profession. They dropped the ball at the end of last year and turned their backs on the community with the weakest remote learning of all time and the teachers had no idea how to use the tech. They immediately just checked out and went on vacation and honestly they didn't prepare for the fall well at all. As for them all complaining about going to work "to die" --- they forget that no one asked the Drs, the retail stores, the grocery stores, all the other people in our community if they wanted to go back to work...teachers in my area are the most entitled and butthurt people of all time and the leadership is the worst....not to mention they act like we want our kids to go to school to die or to get sick and bring it home to us parents. They need to understand we are ALL in this together, it is nothing against them, but they have their jobs and responsibilities and it is time for them to step to the plate and do their job and quit bitching about their personal fears that all of us have to deal with every time we leave the house. Don't want to teach kids, then get a different job - news flash, they are all sucky in COVID world and they are all risky.

FWIW I think that's pretty unfair to the teachers. I don't know what its like in NY, but my brother and his wife are both high school teachers in another major east coast city and in the spring the school system they are in handed them totally useless online learning tools and basically left them to figure how best to teach the kids (who mostly didn't show up to online classes or submit any work though a mix of lacking internet access and just not caring because it had been decided grades would not be effected by anything because of the pandemic). It was a total disaster but I wouldn't put that on the teachers, plenty of people share in the blame. In this case the IT systems were so poorly architected kids logged in with whatever random screennames they wanted and just hurled racial slurs at them while they tried to teach lessons. And yet many of them are willing to return and teach so long as there is some kind of concrete plan on how to do it because they know they will just take the blame if the school system fucks it up again. I don't think that's a lot to ask for considering their job is essential and they are criminally underpaid.

Teachers don't get paid in the summer break (if they do get paychecks, it's because they spread their paychecks out over 12 months instead of 10). It's not fair to expect teachers to use unpaid vacation time to decide how to conduct school during the pandemic. Teachers aren't trained in technology and they never have been... when I was a kid in school, someone else (the AV guy) brought a filmstrip projector into the classroom and ran the movies, not the teachers. It's always been that way.

Also, one of the difference between in-person school and other essential businesses is the factor of working mainly with children, who don't always behave or follow instructions.

Not trying to cast any shade, this is a really tough time for parents, kids and school districts. I feel bad for kids going into their senior year of high school - they are losing out on a lot of social interaction, and many of them will enter a job market that is totally screwed.

Blame the shit-ass administration.

I don't see how it's possible to reopen schools in the current state of the US and not have it turn into a complete disaster on top of the current disaster.
