Malekko Thicken? (was 'Dark Star rumblings'&&'Deco warbles')
Hello guys, craving everyone's indulgence. Still trying to sort out my bass drone signal path.
Context: smart bass box feeding separate bass amp. Can already do Gilad Hekselman extended chords. Result.
Want: to make thin and synthetic output of bass box more interesting. I'd like options for random chorus, random vibe, octave fuzz.
Have considered and rejected Strymon Deco (too polite); OBNE Dark Star (too gothic); Pinebox Sirens + JPTRFX ROYGBIV (not random enough), Drolo Stamme[n] (too complex).
Looks like it's a random chorus and an octave fuzz. Came *that close* to buying one of the Doug Tuttle Random Choruses on Reverb but missed it. Have a local contender for the Blue Box role but don't want to name it and spook it.
Just learned that the Malekko Thicken has extensive random chorus options. I like the demos, but wonder if anyone here has hands-on?

If you rejected the Deco this might be not interesting but I always found that the El Capistan really does nice random warblöe, and it is has a secondary function for tape crinkle which gives nice sound. Plus the degrading sound-on-sound looper might be nice. I think Pladask Tåken does good random modulation as well.

Tåken is definitely a good choice. You might want to check out the Fairfield Shallow Water random k-filter as well. Mid-fi does a one knob random vibrato. EQD Aqueduct? Pair either of those four with a meatbox in front of them and you're well subby and lively.

Hello guys, thank you very much for careful suggestions. That's much appreciated. I will respond to fcknoise's post with a gentle pointer to that excellent typo on 'warble', which made me imagine a Swedish small-shop maker's wood-cased umlauted lo-fi mod box...
I had considered both the Shallow Water and the Mid-Fi Random Vibrato but they feel too 'light', that is, their modulation seems appropriate for topline, but is probably too ahem *mercurial* for a bass drone. Ditto the Taken (can't do the accent on this kbd) tho' I'm sure I'd love it for other purposes.
I have a feeling that the El Cap will strike me the same way, but I will listen with an open mind, promise.
I hadn't considered the Meatbox (I'm ignorant of fuzzes in general, but learning quickly). Good call.
Meanwhile, still keen to get other perspectives on the Malekko Thicken?

Just pick up all the things you are thinking of, test em with your rig, then flip the losers of the eventual shootout.

the random setting on the EQD Aqueduct might work. i've used it on bass when recording & it sounds cool.

My SO just had their car stolen. This discussion might be more theoretical than I had hoped. Curses!

Bumpitty bump.
Have come *this* close to nailing my bass drone board, but need random chorus. Particularly interested in: the Mid-Fi Random Chorus of 2018 (turns up fairly often; no sound demos but assume it's the Random Vibrato with the dry signal mixed in; if so great one-trick pony); the Malekko Thicken (more versatile but perhaps my understanding of 'random' is different from that of the Malekko dudes); the Walrus Audio Julia; one or two others.
I'm interested in perspectives on any of these but particularly the Thicken, which looks great on paper but doesn't seem to get much love.
PS The police recovered the car.
