Some info on boosting the delay time of the FX90, if you end up getting one of those: https://www.doktorsewage.com/hot-rod-do ... log-delay/

As far as I can tell, the FX-96 (either version) is essentially the same circuit and magicmojo chips as the FX-90 (and DM-2/3) but with a super useful tone control for the repeats. You can make them fairly clean or very dark and soupy.friendship wrote:Some info on boosting the delay time of the FX90, if you end up getting one of those: https://www.doktorsewage.com/hot-rod-do ... log-delay/
I opened mine up when I got it (it was only $75 I think) and removed a resistor that was soldered across the delay time pot. Not sure if it came like that or someone had modified it. Anyway, it basically limited the time range to slapback which I didn’t want. Now it gets up to the 300ms range and sounds great.
Poweruser tip: You can safely run the FX-96 at a higher voltage for slightly longer delay times. 12v seems to be the sweet spot for me, but it will take up to 18v. Trade off (or bonus depending on your tastes) the longer delay times overclock the circuit and get all crusty.

Re: analog delays, so many of these god damn things
finally got an ID series Bright (id-300 which is all i need)
WOW
i dunno what they did to make the ID series so effing good but holy cow man
these delays are singularly awesome
Dark version i had was too dark for the rest of my signal path
man the character that these delays have...
i mean they have to be among the best analog delays ever made

Re: analog delays, so many of these god damn things
I have an Electro-Harmonix DMMTT from the first run with the MN3008 chips, and I love the beans out of the thing, but size wise on my Nano+ it doesn’t make a lot of sense.
I had the chance to buy and Echoczar but when they time came around I was just so over it I wasn’t in the mood to drop a grand+ on something like that.
I also really enjoyed playing around with the Memory Boy quite a lot.
I’d love to get my hands on one of those Maxon delays, or those old Boss ones, and the EAD AD4009 I think it’s called?
Just to try it.

Re: analog delays, so many of these god damn things
I recently had a breakthrough with the CBA Thermae. I loved the gritty sound of the long repeats but didn't know how to get that sound without the pitch shifting sequencer. A pal clued me in to the Step mode. You can set it up so you effectively have three delay length settings, the longest of which can be like 40 seconds, and use the second footswitch to tap through them. With an expression pedal and the glide control, you can sweep down from no delay through flange and reverb to super aliased noise. It's amazing.
I still don't know that I'd pay $500 for one but I got a good deal and I'm happy that I have it.

i am still using the malekko ID 300 bright
my arion SAD-3 is feeling neglected
would like to get the ID-600 version of the bright, not for the increased time, but has expression in, and also has tails. the 300 has neither
the bright ID-600 is rare af, seems like

Re: analog delays, so many of these god damn things
It seems like you and I have similar taste in delays. The id-600 dark was probably the delay that I thought sounded the best, and tonally it worked really well for my signal chain. I had both the id-600 dark and the 616D. Side by side I could hear some minor differences, but the added modulation made the 616D a little more appealing to me.
The DMMTT with the MN3008 chips was really REALLY nice. The effects loop was a ton of fun, and the division cycling feature made it sound like a weird pitch shifter in the best way possible.
The Red Knob Mod RKM version of the Tonal Recall is what I landed on eventually. It’s small, the repeats sound excellent, and after trying and hating the original Tonal Recall it made me extremely happy.

Re: analog delays, so many of these god damn things
right on man.
yeah i have actually now had TWO id-600 darks pass through my hands. but not a single id-600 bright
i have an old ampeg from the 60s with the treble at 9 o clock and the bass at 3 oclock, so i need the Bright version lol
so what do you think: delay before reverb, or reverb before delay?
seems like the logical is reverb last

Re: analog delays, so many of these god damn things
With that type of amp setup that makes a lot of sense. My guitar signal’s really jangly sounding, so, something with a dark voicing works better for me.
I go reverb > delay, mostly because I run a small 6 pedal board and this means I can run reverb > tremolo > delay for optimum rhythmic ambience. Also, if I want reverb, I typically want maximum, washy, murky, mushy ambience. Which I think is easier running reverb > delay than delay > reverb.

Re: analog delays, so many of these god damn things
I know it's not cool-kid-approved, but honestly, my favorite analog delay is the EHX Memory Boy Deluxe. It just sounds so good, and has all the features I'd ever want. I think it's criminally underrated. Definitely one of the most underrated current-production pedals.
I say that having owned (and still owning) many boutique analog delays, including some very fancy versions of very popular/expensive ones never released to the public. They're all super cool, but every time I pull out the MBD to play with, it blows me away. It's one of my very few pedals in the "never sell" category. It even does some amazing chorus sounds with the mod turned up. Also, being able to sequence through subdivisions is super cool. Also also, tap temp + good tone + fx loop is just great. King of analog delays as far as I'm concerned.

yeah, great features, and I actually really like the tone on that one - I guess it just enrages the cork sniffers or something because it doesn't follow the pixie dust lineage and deliver the limpid clarity of the DMM
but I really liked the Germ 4 BMP too, even though it has sweet fuckall to do with the BMP

I had the tiniest memory toy and honestly the core delay tone on that was really really solid - so I believe it about the DMB. Considering getting another.

Re: analog delays, so many of these god damn things
this thread put me in the analog delay rabbit hole. What if I was previously wrong, that the El cap and timebender are not the only delays I would ever want and use. What if I also want one of those crunchy 300ms pink things eivind plays.
fuck
fuck

I can get down with 300ms although I prefer pedals that stretch to 500. That really is enough for me
