DE7 replacement? Controlled oscillation options?

Post by frigid midget »

Pretty sure I've done this exact same thread years ago.

I'm a recent DE7 convert. Awesome delays tones obviousy, but the main draw for me is the controlled/infinite oscillation warble

Needless to say, Ibanez's tone-lok series has...well, questionable build quality. The dry output on my DE7 has gone kaputz, and I've been wanting to step up my game anyway, in terms of reliability.

I don't think I'm super picky when it comes to that background ambient noise I'm after, I would think there's plenty of delay peds that could at least serve the same purpose....Right? I've been eyeing the Walrus Slö, which seems to do a freeze type thing. Totally different than the DE7's infinite washy oscillilation, which is okay...but still, a regular freeze funcion doesn't sound nearly as interesting and musical, there's got to be a couple other options out there, right? Ballpark would be fine, doesn't have to nail the DE7 trick if that's too miuch to ask.

Been lusting for a Tensor too, but it doesn't look like it can do anything like that...Or can it? :idk:
Just sold my ES2, which has an osscillation feature that *almost* comes close. I would've kept it, if it weren't for the unuseable modulation, crude tap tempo, and also shitty reliability + build quality.

The el capistan does this probably the best of all delay pedals I've tried. At 3 o clock it just sits so nicely under everything. Also with the switchable trails/true bypass option you can turn it off and it keeps playing the pad underneath as you play over it.

the original Endangered Audio AD4096 on the infinity setting does this wonderfully (i haven't tried one of the newer ones).

Thanks. Surely one of the Chase Bliss delays can do a similar thing, no? Mood, Thermae,...? CB peds intimidate me though, can't imagine all those controls and switches would work for quick on the fly tweaking :idk:

Does the DoD DFX9 on the Inf. Hold setting come close to this?

Decided that one of those CB peds or Red Pandas are way overkill for me. Even if I'm replacing my two current delays and mix up my whole delay game.

I'll be on the lookout for an El Capistan. Cheers.

The el cap for sure does this, i had an el cap and i've got two de7's, the de7 can be found in the el cap, but the cap has so much more.

What you're really looking after is compression on the repeats and a pretty hefty input coming into the delay pedal, so if you wanted to get this sound on almost any delay pedal you go:

OD/fuzz/anything that ups the gain into the delay (clean boost prob works too)
set oscillations to where it sits where you want it (even though it runs away volume-wise)
gain AFTER delay (compressor works too but this ain't TGP) to keep the volume constant.

This way the delay reacts to the incoming signal (as opposed to just running away on its own and ignoring new sounds coming in) as well as the outgoing signal is mostly constant as well.

or just use the de7.
This man had an el cap and sold it because he thought it made him sound too good. Like activating cheats on his guitar tone. Well it goes to show, I kinda blow at guitar and he is a riff machine so

Ok, so assuming I'll go with the El Cap for the tape and backround ambient tasks, or at least when my DE7 falls apart a little more.

Now what to do for reverse delays, or something that adds textures or dreamy/creepy artifats on the repeats? DD5, Canyon, Obscura,..They've got actual useable reverse modes, and aren't as eleborate/pricey as the CB/RP delays :idk: Not as unique either I guess, but I'm more of a set and forget kinda guy, and I like I said, something like a CB Thermae would be overkill.

And where are you guys on fx loops in delay peds? Spend a little extra to get a nice delay with the right modulation option(s) build in, not keeping one of your favorite modulation/picth/whtvr pedals hostage in that fx loop, and not limiting your pedal choice to the fx equiped delays out there?

Srry, slightly derailing the subject here. I'm almost there :)

For that I would look at a PS-2 or a PS-3 perhaps. I mean, I need to suggest timebender here because it does all of that the best, but it has the shitty power requirements and it def is not set and forget. It does too much for that. People also compain that the repeats are too quite and have a volume drop.

FX-loops has always intrigued me, but whenever I've had the chance to actually use one I've found it pretty annoying to deal with. But that is probably because why and what effect would i put in the loop of the eventide space? it does everything already. Same with timebender, I don't need to try a delay with some stuff in its loop. That said, I can totally see the point in having like a multi-mod effect in the loop of something. It makes sense.

Maybe not the most exciting suggestion, but doesn't the EQD Avalanche Run do everything you mention?
