Re: History of Fuzz
The very very first would be whatever busted board led to the Bass VI fuzz sound in Don't Worry Bout Me by Marty Robbins, right?
And then the Maestro FZ-1, if I'm not mistaken.

Re: History of Fuzz
Sanner was quitting the Fender Factory. On the way out he punched a Thinline Tele Protoype. He drove all the way to Bakersfield to sign up with Semie.
As he drove, the blood on his left hand dried into a somewhat scattered, but interconnected, lines. With his Fairlane running, Ed charged into the little factory off Panama Lane, dunked his hand in some solvent, and backhanded his open hand on a sheet of butcher paper Semie used for business contacts.
Sanner grabbed Semie's monogram pen and began to scrawl values over that blood transfer. The Guild Foxey Lady was born.
Then, Mike Matthews went to the Guild office with a knife a roll of quarters demanding that the East Coast destroy all guitar electronic devices past the Appalachian Range.
So, Semie took back Ed's design and named it Fuzzrite, still giving credit to the Reverend Boat right for the cash.

jimmy page heard a prophecy that he would be killed by one of gary hurst's electronic projects, so he ate all gary's breadboards before he could finish them. then one day jeff beck punched page in the belly and he puked up the mk1 tonebender. roger mayer is prometheus.

Re: History of Fuzz
Shortly after this David Gilmour's beard gained sentience during a particularly spicy acid jam, and started a pedal company. Its first product was the eponymous Fuzz Face and Mr Gilmour was mightily pleased with what his hair had accomplished.

Re: History of Fuzz
The maestro fz-1 was pretty much like the EHX synth organ of its time. It wasn't meant to make you guitar sound like it is really pissed off, it was meant to make it sound like a brass section.
Check this video out, it is pretty fun bit of history

Re: History of Fuzz
More fuzz history:
The pre-pedal days of fuzz resulted from people dropping their amp.
It produced this song

The "fuzz here" is a broken amp, the speaker got loose. To remedy that they stuffed the amp with newspaper. This was before the days where blues was primarily associated with our colleagues over at TGP hoarding gear for thousands of dollars to play a solo over a 12 bar and then call someone an idiot for thinking they could do the same thing using a wrong set of pickups.
Another "dropping your amp to make it better" example is this song, where the tubes are actually loose in the amp which produces the fuzz tone

Re: History of Fuzz
Following on this, this is the fuzz that rolling stones used on Satisfaction, as I am sure youse know. And true to the story behind it, the wiki for satisfaction was originally supposed to be played by a brass sectionfcknoise wrote:The maestro fz-1 was pretty much like the EHX synth organ of its time. Because of the popularity of the Stones and the song, the search for fuzz by all kindsa pedal manufacturers started.Richards' guitar riff—intended to be replaced by horns—opens and drives the song

The history tree all leads to the fuzz god of the Maestro FZ-1. I'll do some more research because this is actually quite fun
