Re: The running thread
I like having goals, even just ones I make for myself (compared to putting a specific goal event on the calendar). Right now my goal is to get under 18 minutes for a 5k. I think if I gave it a real go I could get under 20 now, but I'm still a ways off from. Helps me get out to run when I don't feel like it and I always feel better afterwards.
This thread is great. It's funny how much my running has progressed in just a couple of pages.

I promise I will, as soon as the knee pain stops.goroth wrote:Do some intervals.
Make them horrible.
Decided that for now my only goal is to strengthen my knee in order to see if I can start running again in a couple months.
This week I went cycling a couple times (carrying my daughter on the bike), and after 15km it started hurting again, so probably I m gonna stick to walk/hike for a while.

Re: The running thread
Yeah, for sure. I ended up with a slight case of runner's knee after my last marathon and it took a long time to sort it out. Lots of stretching/increasing mobility in my quads and hamstrings, then strengthening with a balance board and stuff. Insanely boring but I'm back feeling pretty good on my long runs now. Though thinking about it I noticed it most on stairs. In any case, knee is good but it required some care.
@Pete - how you liking those New Balances? I'm looking for something with a bit more stability and padding for real long runs, but man, they looked funky as hell.

Re: The running thread
Got back to intervals today for the first time in a while.
But it'll do me good.

I like 'em. Agreed that the looks aren't good. I really like the midsole foam. I'm alternating between them and a pair of Nike Pegasus. Nikes are firmer. I think I actually like everything about the New Balances more except the looks. I think that because the ride is so plush it sometimes feels hard to pick up the pace, but I think my feelings are deceptive because the times on Strava are normally quicker.goroth wrote:@Pete - how you liking those New Balances? Re: The running thread
I think I had an older version of those years ago and remember good things. For some reason I always get something different when I get new running shoes though rather than sticking to one I know I like

Re: The running thread
Same. I also used to just go into a specialty store get whatever they told me based on them watching me jog around. For the last few pairs I've just read reviews and picked out what seems right to me and I've had less pain and aches. I moved from mild stability shoes to neutral and my body is a lot happier.coldbrightsunlight wrote:I think I had an older version of those years ago and remember good things. Re: The running thread
haha same I went to get some at a store recently because I needed them relatively urgently but for a couple of years I've just ordered them. I think the gait analysis stuff is probably a bit overhyped unless you've got specific issues. But it's definitely one of those situations where I can get up-sold easily and then be annoyed with myself after haha. Not that I'm buying SUPER fancy stuff but if I just want regular trainers and come out with something costing £100...

Pegasus are nice and simple too, I like them. Was thinking about picking up a pair the other day actually. Might get those NBs though.

Re: The running thread
Pegasus are nice, I still have an old pair I run errands in but the soles are too gone for running. They were a good pair of shoes tho while they lasted

Re: The running thread
It’s funny with running shoes where the soles are dead. You run in them and they feel like bricks. Walk down to the shop and it’s line “woooaaaahh, the comfort! Such squish! Many clouds!”
Makes you realise how much load running puts on your body.

Re: The running thread
right! What I have had with my last two pairs though is that the heel REALLY gives out while the rest of the shoe is still fairly OK. Guess that's an artefact of the way I run or maybe just bad luck with shoes. But it means even walking more than short distances is sketchy so I just em for cycling. Which is great!
