btw how to go about fills etc? do you just accept that its the same fill every 4th bar or are there and good tricks to get surprised by the loops you program yourself?

Several methods!

Firstly, digitakt which I have now has conditional triggers which can vary the pattern either sequentially, on command or randomly. So that's nice. I can also do a few things to vary patterns on the fly by quickly pressing buttons on it.

Oooorrr lean into the drum machine!!! And no fills just find a good beat. This is genre dependent but can be great.

For recording I'll often live play the whole song and alter the sequence as I go. Or sometimes I'll record several percussion tracks and overlay them offset by a few beats to find cross rhythms.

In terms of playing along, it's a bit of practice, can be a little different to playing with a drummer. But a combination of remembering to listen and alter your timing as you go, and practicing timing in general
