Re: Driving Notion and the Clang Gang REBORN
I'll do that today and let you know the results. I will say it does get pretty compressed at some settings.
Are you on bass? I think I liked it better on bass than I do on guitar. When I played bass I almost never turned it off, but I kept it pretty low gain.

I just tried it and it was kind of a mess honestly. It might have been how I had it set, but it was either clanky and clear but not very fuzzy, or a fuzzy squishy soup. I will say, single notes sounded awesome, but anything more complex than root+5th and it was a weird intermodulated mess.

This is for guitar, but i also dug it a lot more on bass so I’d probably fuck with it on both.neonblack wrote:I'll do that today and let you know the results. I will say it does get pretty compressed at some settings.

I sent this to Boatrich but I figured I'd post it here too. It's the Driving Notion into a dirty Quilter amp. Quilters are solid state but it's my main amp and I slam it with dirt all the time. I usually run it clean but this still sounds pretty rad.
It's like 12 minutes long and I talk alot and it's recorded on my phone in my living room so take it as you will

I feel like maybe a SS/BS Mini might get you what you want. If you put the Bias a lil past noon, the Gain around 3:00, the Bass around 9:00, and the Treble around 3-4:00 you can get a clankier sound out of it. Nothing quite as dramatic and scooped as the DN, but perhaps more toward your current taste?neonblack wrote:Anyone know of anything like a DN-lite? Another drive with some character at low gain that will add some clank without all the harsh squishy compressed glass shattering tones? They're fun but it's too drastic a departure from my base guitar sound.
Great deals with lordgalvar, filipre, seten, DannDubblewe, PumpkinPieces, backwardsvoyager, DADGBD, jwar, JonnyAngle, dandolin, pd~, Dungus, dminner

Re: Driving Notion and the Clang Gang REBORN
I've currently got both a Mini and a Driving Notion. The Driving Notion definitely clangs, and I really really like it for low-gain stuff over higher-gain. It's probably one of the most unique drives I've ever played and I've been recording licks with it just to listen to it later.
The Mini can kinda clang, but definitely is more of a sputter and spit kind of sound. I keep the Mini bias really low (like 8 or 9 o' clock) and just adjust the gain to my taste to get from torn-speaker "cleans" to almost-fuzz. It's not "velcro" at all, though.
Unfortunately I have really limited board room (unless I dig my Classic JR out of my closet), and the Mini is much more versatile than the DN, so I'm trying to dump the Driving Notion... but I have a feeling i might miss it when its gone. Definitely a unique sound. Wish i could justify keeping it around for that low-gain sound.
I've also had a few Scramblers... I can kinda see where the DN being based off a scrambler circuit comes from but it honestly doesn't sound too much like a "regular" Scrambler, there's definitely a lot of modifications to the circuit.

Re: CLANG GANG 2020: The Gang Gets Quarantined
Hello again my brethren and sistren.
I got an EAE Surveyor yesterday and I thought I should come visit. It brings the clang like no other. Second only to the Driving Notion in terms of pure glass shattering treble. But holy shit, it can do so much with such simple controls. Huge gated low end fuzz, nasty lo-fi drive. Of course it does the Shellac thing too. I actually really like it with the gain all the way down as a pseudo clean tone.
Thinking of snagging a percolator to smash it in the butt. Right now I'm running Surveyor into Fuck and it's glorious.
How's the gang?

Re: CLANG GANG 2020: The Gang Gets Quarantined
I picked up a Dude Incredible and I love it. I considered just getting a Surveyor when they came back but it doesn't save that much real estate and they do pair so well together.
The bass control on the Surveyor is really interesting. I guess because it's pre-gain? I like to roll it up to just below the point where it starts farting out when I'm running it low gain. But high gain and full bass is a pretty intense sound, too.

Yeah I'm pretty sure it's pre gain. I think it does a better job riding the edge of too much than the DN did. And it doesn't feel like it sucks all the mids out like the DN did to me.
I'll try to get some clips somehow. Maybe I can use the headphone out on my amp and run it into my phone? Gonna guess probably not though.

Re: CLANG GANG 2020: The Gang Gets Quarantined
its been i don't know how many months now since i sent to get my DN traced and cloned. came quickly to the conclusion that i don't really enjoy playing electric guitar without it. Still pushing through and suffering on without it while its out of my hands, but man it feels like im just dragging my teeth across sandpaper every time i sit down to play. cannot wait to get it back in my hands. will be relieved when i can hoard pcbs of it and have three backup pedals on top of that so that i don't ever have to deal with this again in my lifetime hopefully. At first it bothered me that its such a huge part of what i do, but now ive just come to terms with the fact that the clang indeed owns me and i in no way own the clang whatsoever...

Dude, get a surveyor! I bet you could get close to the DN. They just put a new batch up last week, I'm sure there are still some left.

Even with the international shipping fee, it's probably still worth it.

Re: CLANG GANG 2020: The Gang Gets Quarantined
Any suggestions for cheaper pedals that I could use to get my clang on with a twin reverb? I want a ton of treble on tap.
Would a cheap rangemaster clone get me there at all? Looking to spend like $150 max.

boss od-3 with the treble dimed and gain set moderate is pretty clangy! But like a twin dimed with the treble all up kinda is that sound. Middle position and the pickups outta phase helps alot
