Anyone have experience with Boss MZ-2 (Digital Metalizer)?

Post by Psyre »

I've been considering picking 1-2 up for dual mono Digitone configuration and possibly individual Machinedrum out processing. Just curious if anyone has used one and how well the distortion mixed with the chorusing/doubling? :idk:

I've had one for a while but I only used it on guitar.
They say the drive on it is a bit like a simplified HM-2, not sure though, it seemed more middy and less heavy to me, I have a HM-2 clone now.
The drive on the MZ-2 was nice and the doubling effect is quite cool (sort of like a cold chorus), sounds a bit like the 80's in a fun and usable way.
I mostly used the thing in doubling mode with the gain pretty much completely down for a somewhat vaguely synthy sounding lead sound (it still has quite a bit of drive with the gain low).

I really want to buy one of these. I have no idea if it would be any use with bass but I also use synths/drum machines. Basically I wish they weren't always $150 when they pop up used because that's a lot for a blind buy on something that may or may not be stupid....

For bass or drum machines I would say no, better get a HM-2 or clone instead.

If it doesn't work well on bass or drum machine, you could always use it to record a thrash metal concept album about a gang of teenage skeletons who smoke weed.

I wouldn't bother.

The distortion circuit isn't special. It's not bad in any way, but it's fairly character-less, and doesn't give you much room to shape the sound. The chorus is a chorus digital chorus. It too is decent. Neither bad nor good. Combined... it sounds like a decent 80s hard rock distortion with a decent 80s chorus.

It commands balls money because Dave Gilmour used it on something once upon a time.

Ahhh makes sense, guess I was hoping for digital metalized to mean the rate on the doubling/chorus could resonate and be distorted. Bunmer!! More HM-2's and possibly Xtortions then =)

Yes, I think those two are by far and away the best options, as both have pretty whacky control sets that let you get into some freaky eq settings

Totally agree.
The Metalizer is fun but not in that way of mangling stuff I guess.
