I think that's just the difference between those who care about how things look vs those who don't. Either way I'd say most musicians go for sound first. If you 'curate' a board to appeal to someone else's aesthetic then obviously that's stupid, but who does that? I know people who claim to not give a shit about how a pedal looks, and that's fine, but if you do.. there are choices.
For me, bad design just gives me this queasy feeling like the person/corporation that made it didn't care at all, and then why should I. It doesn't matter if it hits my taste perfectly, just that it gives the impression of being well considered. I know the pedals I paint myself are never perfect, but I usually get the best results when I take the time to plan out and sketch the design.
Sometimes the pedalboards I see on instagram are so perfectly *curated* its like those home design shows where like they're in the kitchen and there's not even a pepper grinder visible. Who lives like that? No one cares of there's a sock on the floor or your coily cable isn't perfect. Or maybe people do? I don't.

I agree about super curated IG boards, they look good but they seem so perfectly clean that nobody is gonna play those, like they're a piece of furniture or an ornament.
I mean, i like clean boards because they're usually easier for troubleshooting, but there's a limit where order becomes becomes OCD.

One time I put an EQD and a Walrus audio pedal on board to see how many more likes it would get on IG and sadly it worked

I've never "got" the appeal of walrus... EQD I don't horribly mind the look... Of some.. I never jived with the ones I owned sonically... Which is odd as I have owned a humming bird and tremolo is like my spirit animal effect..
Simple is best for me. Good colors, nice font. Cool knobs gets me the most I guess. I don't like the pedals with crazy artwork all over them. Walrus is the perfect example. The artwork is really cool but I don't really want my pedals looking like that. Abominable Effects....Jesus Christ.
I like some pedals with graphics but I prefer clean balanced vs flashy. For example, I like the OG Pharoah...but I think the newer one looks wack.
So, this will sound weird coming from me but I don't really care about aesthetics at all anymore. I used for sure (obviously I rehoused other people's pedals), but for some reason over the last year or so I just don't care anymore. I look for pedals mostly based on price now. If they look good, that's awesome. I love cool looking stuff. I just don't require it anymore I guess. Most of my pedals are pretty plain looking compared to what I could have/do.
