Gear you don't use much

Post by imJonWain »

What do you guys do with gear you don't use much anymore? Do you horde it? sell it?

I have a few things I bought years ago and don't really use much anymore but am torn on selling because if I decide I want them again at some point they are kind of expensive now. I guess I just need to shit or get off the pot :) lol

I sell it.
And if I want it again, I buy it.

What I learned a few years back is to only buy shit I can easily get any day on Reverb/ebay, or alternative gear that is fairly close. :idk:

Depends what it is, how much it's worth and how big it is. I used to flip everything for money for new gear but now I have a selection of fuzz pedals that I don't use all the time but do specific sounds I like a lot. Since they take up little space and I don't need the money I keep them. More expensive pedals and other things I struggle to do this with because it feels wrong to have nice, expensive or large things lying around not being used :idk:

For me it's a 210 Musicman amp and an old Silvertone Amp so not super small things but also not expensive in the grand scheme I guess either.

I've been going through a sea change with music wants/needs, and I lot of stuff I've accumulated over the years isn't so relevant to me anymore. For example, why do I still have a 120w amp head when I haven't played any music necessitating such a thing in almost a decade? When the virus subsides and people are spending money again, I''m gonna streamline. I don't like keeping around stuff that isn't being used.

Flip it. I can't stand to see my stuff sit on shelves and eventually it is like a cartoon, instead of seeing gear devices I just see (usually small) stacks of money.

I flipped so many pedals in the last few years I basically have a tub of distortion pedals, some ring mods and some weirdo filters left. I have a few older fuzzes I would never part with but they barely ever get used in a box. I have many bass heads I should flip but I don’t want to.

Basically I would rather it sit in my creepy basement than deal with the headache of craigslist at this point - I mean once social distancing is over that is!

I typically get rid of stuff that I dont click with but I do have a large amount of pedals (20-25) that I dont have on a pedalboard at the moment. I have kind of a sentimental thing with some pedals and other pedals I dont want to get rid of because I think that I might use it again some day. I will usually switch out pedals here and there so I dont think its a problem. Basically I'm a pedal hoarder but other gear I dont feel like I have to much of an issue with. I don't have extra synths or guitars I dont use and the amp I'm not using very often I plan on selling in the near future.

JK, i don't think i ever had more than 3 pedals outside of what's on board. If i don't use it i flip it, end of the story. - this is also why i have bought/sold the same pedal multiple times during the years.

I go in waves of projects and interests so sometimes stuff sits for awhile and that's fine with me. If I don't like it I will flip it, otherwise it waits until I circle back.

I've bought certain devi pedals over and over again so I just keep what I have. I also have two Holowon/TheSyle pedals but virtually no one gives a fuck about them so might as well keep em. I don't use these pedals live/in bands much, but when it comes to recording they offer their own unique thing. Oh and nostalgia.

Other stuff though I typically get rid of as soon it starts sitting too long. Selling stuff is kind of a pain in the ass though and that is what really slows me down.

Well I guess I mean that if I don't like it I'll get rid of it but I like a lot of pedals for the most part haha. I also hold onto stuff for a while if I do like it because I don't wanna regret getting rid of it and then having to go back and buy it again.

I've downsized a lot, but I'd still consider myself a hoarder.

seriously, considering all the super cool etched pedals you have i'd have a hard time selling those too.
Luckily i have limited gear funds so, if i want something new, most of the time i gotta sell something.
