Looking for a high headroom overdrive/boost

Post by halkaloogie »

I'm looking for an always on overdrive/boost that has a high headroom. I know the klon and all the clones fit the bill, but I want to know what else there is out there. A quick Google search doesn't pull up much more than the klon clones.

smallsound/bigsound Mini is my go to for an always on boost/drive. Bias and gain really let you sculpt when it breaks up and how.

#rip works well as a clean boost in mode 1.

The boost side on the Fulldrive 3 was the best thing of that pedal. I believe they made a dedicated pedal after people asked for it.

Definitely interested in this one. ^^^^^^^^^^ :snax:

In general I like stuff like DOD 250, Mantic Thug and Stone Deaf PDF-1.

It really all depends on what pickups, other pedals and amps you'll be usin' it with though.

Sort of in principle but in practice it really doesn't sound like one IMO. It's quite different and very high headroom. Lots of clipping and LP/voicing choices but wouldn't be my first choice. The Thorpy or Hamstead would be. The #rip in mode 1 or even 2 is a great choice but not as varied as the Thorpy and Hamstead.

:thumb: Yeah, seems interesting, but they're expensive and don't come up for sale too often.

(I'm also interested in the Hamstead Subspace.)

Yeah, the Nordvang is very pricey. I like it in the mix though so I kept it. Hamstead has a new pedal out soon, kind of an OD/comp/EQ dual thing I spoke with them about over a year ago. Looks good. I'll try it soon in London.

I'm trying to put it towards the end of the board, and push it with fuzz and boost. Hence why I'm looking for a high headroom pedal. Something that has volume to give instead of caving in when being pushed hard with other pedals. Most of the pedals I have at the moment don't cut it. The electro harmonix germanium OD works great, but is super noisy being germanium and being in the middle of the chain.

I like boost at the end of the chain as well. All the pedals I mentioned work reasonably well in that placement.
