how do you like it watching in 2020? I'm still debating whether to start it or not, afraid it might not have aged well...coldbrightsunlight wrote:I'd like to watch this although I'm still making my way through TNG (I know I'm somewhat late to the party on this) I'm loving it and would like more Picard. i think the genuinely good stuff - best of both worlds, birthright pt 1, inner light, hugh, darmok - will always be good. the lame stuff remains as lame as ever.Lebowsky wrote:how do you like it watching in 2020? Yes but no?oldangelmidnight wrote:Tangentially, right? And not in a way that actually matters?
The supernova is what caused Nero to end up in the Kelvinverse (Abrams movies).
The thing I don't like about Picard is that they've decided to retcon stuff from Star Trek: Online, which expanded ST's lore like the Star Wars books did for that universe.
Also, I got used to binging shows and still haven't warmed up to this weekly online episode bullshit.

Yeah. Season 1 and parts of 2 were a bit spotty, 3 has been way better, but throughout there have been episodes that are genuinely really good. Overall I love watching it although there are some not great episodes, I initially started as a sort of education but by this point I'm seriously enjoying itMechaGodzilla wrote:i think the genuinely good stuff - best of both worlds, birthright pt 1, inner light, hugh, darmok - will always be good. the lame stuff remains as lame as ever.Lebowsky wrote:how do you like it watching in 2020? I'd like to recommend anyone participating in this conversation to check out the podcast The Greatest Generation. They review and talk about Star Trek shows. It's funny, smart, and good. You should start at the beginning.

The visuals haven't aged well - and not the CGI/aliens, I mean the look in general. The Enterprise was lit like an office building.Lebowsky wrote:how do you like it watching in 2020? Story-wise, there were a lot of episodes so there are plenty of duds but overall it's still well worth watching.
Probably the most jarring part of Discovery and Picard is seeing TV Trek (aside from DS9 sometimes) that gives much of a shit about cinematography.

From my memory, Enterprise had pretty good visuals for a TV show in the early 2000's.jirodreamsofdank wrote: Probably the most jarring part of Discovery and Picard is seeing TV Trek (aside from DS9 sometimes) that gives much of a shit about cinematography.

Enterprise, like Indiana Jones 4, does not exist.

they used to shoot trek like a TV show, but discovery and Picard are shot/edited like movies. it feels so weird but i guess they're taking advantage of bigger budgets and no ad breaks

Anymore, I'm not sure that the distinctions between TV and movies have any meaning.

Even for a TV show of its time TNG was ugly. Law and Order put more effort into lighting scenes.

episode 3 has a bit more plot momentum, but the writing/direction still seems kind of sloppy, like they don't remember or understand (or care) who Picard is and what he represents. i mean

yeah and the problem with that also is it moves overly slow for the actual amount of plot movement per ep.MechaGodzilla wrote: the writing/direction still seems kind of sloppy
Sorry but I'm dropping it, the premise is getting dumb and like i said to slow for what is there...

It feels like each episode would only take up a half-hour tv slot with commercials, but they're 40-something minutes each.
It's been 3 episodes, now, and so far everything that's happened could be the first half of a regular STNG episode, I'd say.
