expensive reverbs

Post by Errant Tiger »

Is there a dedicated thread somewhere where people sound off about the merits and demerits of our favorite fancy reverbs? Space, BigSky, Ventris, Mercury 7, etc? Searching for "reverb" on here is impossible.

If not, I'd be curious to hear - well, what I just said. I've got a Mercury 7 and I generally really like the sounds I get from it, but as always, I'm thinking about my options...

I have nothing to offer, as despite doing a lot of ambient stuff, I've never given a great deal of thought to reverb.

This may be because I can add it with Audacity so I don't need to do it while recording, but I'm interested in this thread to find out what I'm missing.

I use the H9, which is basically the SPACE. I can honestly say that it covers all the territory that I'll ever need it for.

What about it do you especially like? Anything you dislike about it?

Blackhole, Reverse, and the spring are the three that I use. I use reverse and Blackhole when doing ambient stuff and the spring is one of the more convincing spring reverbs for surf stuff. At first I thought the app was inconvenient, but after becoming more familiar with it I find it more helpful actually. The ability to change the order of my presets is literally one of the best things ever, which is only available with the H9, not the SPACE.

I typed out a long thing and it got deleted.

Basically, I had the Strymon Big Sky which had some very cool algorithms. Sold it for the Empress Reverb which I felt was a bit more "natural" sounding for the most part. I really like the Ghost, Tremolo, Plate, Reverse, and Glitch settings, and love the low pass/hi pass tone controls. I don't love the spring algorithms. I don't think many do. They're actually kind of embarrassing. I like that they have a user forum, and have made many improvements and updates to the firmware. They still haven't fixed the crummy spring algorithms tho.

I have the Recovery Effects Endless Summer real spring reverb, which is weird and beautiful and spooky.

I have the JPTR Fx Kaleidoscope, which is a really great belton brick style reverb.

And I also have a Behringer RV600 Reverb Machine that I got for $25 CAD at a pawn shop that still finds it's way into the mix for certain things.

It all sort of depends on what you want/need the reverb to do.

I got the plugin versions of MangledVerb and Blackhole on sale because Space prices scare me - took me a bit to come to grips with using them (at first I hated Blackhole) but they've definitely firmed up my desire for a Space.

I have a Ventris and it's pretty good at normal plate/spring/hall but I don't love the more out there algorithms.

I'll trade you my Collider and some cash for it Jiro.

I like the Collider but I want more out there reverbs and less delays.

The Collider is awesome and has all the basics covered, and has an amazing spring algo. It's good enough that I'm writing a surf album because of it

For "expensive reverbs" I will state these 2:
Meris Mercury 7
Line6 HX Stomp (I know it's not only a reverb only pedal, but the reverb inside this unit are freightening a lot the Mercury7!)

Space is THE standard by which all other reverbs are measured (for me) and I've not seen it surpassed yet. Bought one as soon as they hit Europe and aside from my current flirtation with a Mercury7 I've never looked anywhere else.

The only demerit that I can think of is the often-touted delay when switching presets but honestly, outside of TGP I've never heard anyone cite it as a legit deal-breaker. Well, that and the fact that it's pretty damn spendy but we now live in a world where $750 eq pedals exist so I suppose all things are relative.

Well HX you have kind of 17 different reverbs, plate and springs are brilliant (the latter have this 3d dimentional stereo effect, like there's an actual spring vibrating in front of you).
Also in my best of list is the Particle rev and the Cave.
The new reverb algorhytms are really cool, and some are very close to what the Mercury7 can do (the Ganymede for example can do the very same lush modulated reverbs as the M7).
Plus on the HX you can create chains up to 6 FX, so what I often do is cobine together more reverbs (in this extent it's like a high-end version of the Zoom Multistomp, which also I love. I didn't mentioned this yet, because it's a very cheap pedal money-wise, but has tons of stellar good sounds!).

M7 on the other hand has this vector pitch effect which really make this stand out from anything out there. And all the secondary paramenters let's you dial-in very detailed sounds (like with the cathedral algorhytm I was able to fake a spring reverb).

Dislike? Nothing to declaire.

One bonus Space has over H9 is all its knobs for insta-tweaking. I love Space and use many different algorithms. I have been digging on some of the more earthy cave ones of late.

If I for some reason lost my Neunaber Expanse, I'd get a Space.

Expensive? The Atmosphere, but it ended my search. I also use an Orion Kafka, Alexander Space Race and a Peavey SRP-16. I had the kaleidoscope, Mercury, WTSE, Immerse V1, and the endeavor.
There is no such thing as having too many fuzzes.
