Are true bypass nerds still a thing?

It seems like it's universally accepted that you should have buffers, but most companies still make true bypass pedals and just offer a separate buffer pedal. At least this lets you mix and match, but it's also more expensive lol. But buffers are fun and easy to DIY so that's a good excuse to dip into that world

Yes, everything has its place, I don't think many guitarists these days care if a pedal is TB or not but in some cases it could matter.

Now I don't like Joe B or any of that kinda blooz rock, but I do really like a fuzzface (at least the ones I've cloned), and it really is futile to put that after a buffer/boost. Unless you want 10x more noise and gain, and you have no other way to get that.

I'm not an expert on buffers but seems to me there are differences, like some buff up your signal an unnecessary amount and some mess with the frequency range in subtle ways. The buffer in old Arion pedals is the worst, but not enough to dissuade me from using them from time to time.

i don't like rats and i only use tubescreamers for boost*, but any time i have an always-on dirt - like klone, blackstone, ssbs mini, dist+ - i expect to be able to leave it on, walk away, and be able to get a nice clean just using the guitar's controls. in an ideal world, i wouldn't use any OD pedal and could just crank the amp to power stage overdrive but i don't play the kind of rooms where that would be allowed lol.

*goddamn buffer in the TS means i haven't had it on the board in a long time! because i would want to run into, say, the blackstone, but the TS buffer messes up the blackstone's clean capability. this is what i mean by "i am a true bypass weirdo"

yeah i was just mentioning distortions, i use neither of those. not familiar with the blackstone cause the only guy i have seen had one was like fucking tame impala or some shit. i guess if it says no buffers on front you should listen. i feel like stuff like distortion pluses and klons should just work by volume alone and no resistance weirdness.

I feel you tho, like almost most of the time true bypass makes more sense electronically

Yeah and it really is not great. Most buffered bypass pedals I don't notice though. Other than aforementioned issues with specific fuzzes.

Oh I should've realized it was something like that haha! A digital "dry" signal is really a whole different ballgame from buffers. Unfortunately I think it was part of what gave buffers a bad name in the first place...

I tried to understand it because I put very tiny impedance pickups in a bass but it got so confusing I just got a preamp with gain pots for it

Yeah, it helped a lot at least. I mean that hasn't got to be bad either, eventide pedals do it and I hear no change in the signal. The converters clip real easy so I still run them in true bypass mode, trails kinda suck anyways

I have a pitch shifter at the beginning of my chain set full wet without any pitch shifting so my tone is never true and thus always a reminder that tone is a lie
