15" Speaker Suggestions: New Criteria Update

Post by Jero »

...for bass specifically, and preferably </= $325 total, but not absolutely set. Just seems like if I'm going much over that I may be better off buying a different/newer cab.

Going in a vented Peavey 2x15. Using with a Sunn 200s (roughly 60 watts), but will be getting something bigger at some point.

Just acquired one of the Peavey 2x15 cabs...standard/shallow version, with triangular ports, and Eminence squarebacks circa '81.

Bottom speaker is completely blown. Looking for something cheap'ish (<$250 total) to replace both speakers with. I know some of your folks have dealt with these cabs before :poke: Planning on using it with bass, but if it sounds good with guitar as well that would be great.

I currently have an old Fender Bassman 50, 2x15 cab loaded with Jensen Neo's, that sounds bad with bass (farts out quick), though nice with guitar. Gonna try those Neos out in the Peavey this weekend, but in the mean time want to weigh the options.

This thread popped up: http://www.ilovefuzz.com/viewtopic.php? ... eavey+2x15
which put the Celestion tf1520/1525's on my radar (so cheap also)...I was already looking at maybe Eminence Deltas or Fane Sovereigns. They seem to be a common rec.

Oh and the most power this will see for now is the Sunn 200s, so I don't need a ton of wattage. It would be nice to not have to upgrade later however, if I get a bigger head.

TL:DR - What cheap speakers should I get for a vented 2x15 Peavey?

Are the speakers blown or does the surround just need to be glued down?

I’ve fixed 4 or 5 peavey cabs that were “blown” and all I had to do was glue the surrounds back in place.

To add to what Johnny Angle said... Do the speakers make any sound at all? Sometimes if the speakers are old, the glue can get brittle and the cone and dome will separate, which sounds like a buzz or flapping. You can't always eyeball this, you might need to pull the speaker and view it up close, while it's laying face up. Take something like a exacto knife or tiny implement and gently test the edges to see if they pull up at all. You can glue the speakers yourself with (if I recall correctly) rubber cement or any glue that remains flexible. I got this info on Talkbass and repaired two Ampeg speakers this way. Since you're pulling the speakers anyway (to replace them) you might as well look.

If the speakers don't make any sound at all, then the voice coil melted, etc, probably not repairable.

I was gifted a Heritage VTX and thought the same thing and it was totally a loose surround where the glue had separated.

As far as a replacement maybe an Eminence Beta 15a would work. They’re like $90 each and apparently pack a wallop although I’ve never used one.

Thanks for the suggestions...Gonna say not repairable. Speaker/surround/etc looks good, but is totally dead. No sound, no reaction to voltage. Top one works though. I could just replace the dead one, but I'd rather update both and have them match.

Sounds like a frozen voice coil or something.

Well now the scheming shall begin

So you want to play guitar and bass with a 215 with a relatively low powered amp?
Eminence legends are what I would choose

Bass really (guitar is simply a plus). I don't have a cab I can use with bass, so that is my focus and hopefully can accomplish with the Peavey. I have a 4x12 I can use for guitar, or the bassman if I don't end up using those speakers in the Peavey.

There's an Ampeg PF115lf locally I can snag for what seems like a steal ($130) that has my eye as well. Have considered getting it and setting the Peavey off to the side for now.

Funny how a working speaker cabinet is often cheaper than buying replacement speakers.

Some times this is great...other's not so much. Right now is a bit of the latter  It's all good though. I'm looking forward to trying different stuff out. Been a while.

Pa speakers that can be or are opimized for sub use work better than you might think, I've always liked pa speakers better than detonated bass guitar speakers :idk:

Where can I get the dampening rings that go around the frame of speakers? My Jensens don’t have them on the backside and it’s a front loaded cab...

So it seems like the Celestion Truvox or the Eminence Legends would be a good choice after all. Both are in my price range too. The truvox 1520 (45-4000hz) are only $100 shipped for a pair. That seems crazy cheap.

you can always buy something. But I'd just go to Home Depot and buy some 1/2" wide foam tape and use that

My man! I couldn't think of the word 'gasket'  Shit was driving me crazy.
I'll definitely go the foam tape route, as I already have some. Figured that'd work but wasn't positive.

That sounds right, there is also the wattage/headroom thing paired with how big an amp you are using, personally I don't ever go under 400 watts on a speaker :idk: oh stay away from those Celestion green something neodymium things.. Maybe it was because I had a prototype one but it was the most beefless of speakers :idk:
