Anyone hear it? I heard the title track when it was released and didn't care for it nor the album the first time I heard it. Had a lot of expectations. Tool was at one point my favorite band and I've seen them maybe 20 or so times live. I was 16 when Lateralus came out and that was such a big thing for me and my friends.

After listening to it more it has grown on me. Still feel like some parts are a little hastily put together or maybe they could have done things differently, or "newer" if that is possible: I hear a lot of stuff from previous albums in terms of sound.

In the end I'm enjoying it. CSB

I quite like it. I like how jammy it is - they just pick a riff and keep going with it. And a lot of my favourite music does that. So

Not as great as some of their older stuff sure, but a decent album nonetheless.

I have just one thing to say about this Album: Mr. Jones please stop your fucking solos. Enough. WE WANT RIFFS. You even put a two-guitar harmonized part in Descending, this stuff was terrible even in the 00s when that huge pile of shit that was metalcore came out.

Also, bass has little to no space compared to guitar and drums.

For the rest, somehow enjoyable album cause at least Maynard vocals are decent, and Carey's drumming is always a pleasure to hear even if redundant, but if the tracks were a bit shorter it would have sounded really more focused.

I'ma have to go full music snob here - Uninspired, anemic, redundant. Maybe because I stopped listening to Tool almost 20 years ago and shifted to more profane heavy music, but I lost my patience completely for this. I still respect their earlier work but this record seems lazy and sterile by comparison. Nothing that draws me in lyrically, nothing really new musically, too many tribute-to-self, backwards gazing passages... Only songs I thought were decent picked up halfway through (Pneuma, Invincible) or at the very end, (7empest).

The rest isn't really floating my boat, but I think I should give it more time. Each album has become successively less immediate, but in the end everything up to this point has been great, so I'm not too bothered by the fact that at the moment I really don't think it's all that.

well, if a riff is really good, i totally agree with you, but i feel like they choose the wrong ones .

There are a few riffs i would listen to for hours without problem, like the bass+drums riff that comes in at 7.04 in Rosetta Stoned. One of my favorite riffs EVER.

I was joking with regards to this one. This album is only OK. But listenable OK.

Interesting I've never liked any of their lyrics.

But I think I'm missing a lot of the comparison with their earlier stuff that other people are having as I've only listened to some of their records a couple of times and thought they were neat.

IMO its better than 10,000 days but I don't think that was to hard to top. I don't expect much from them in the form of ground breaking new jams that continue to push their sound because they're older dudes with a lot of other things going on. I felt the same way about the last sleep album too. It's a decent album but nothing special.

Agree on Sleep. The comeback record years after the glory days is never going to be stunning or groundbreaking. But it could be a decent record.

You know what i learned about comeback records? that they will never match expectations, and not because the musicians are simply qoting themselves (i mean maybe they are, but that's not the point), but because of the evolution of my musical interests.

After the first couple of spins of Fear Inoculum i was quite disappointed but still doubtful: maybe it was just me that, given the fact that lately i listen to totally different things, i was not in the right mood for it, but after all they were one of my favorite bands some years ago. So i decided to go through all of Tool's discography, from top to bottom and then re-listen to this one. Result: it sounded even more boring

So, i will always love those old albums because i listened to those in specific periods of my life, but listen to new music that sounds exactly the same it's not something that's gonna make me jump on my chair again. Unless it's really surprising.
