I just think there is a lot to be said for things that have their own CPU, RAM, Etc. Computers are only going to get better at exponential rates, and controllers with it.
But for right this very second... if you can find hardware for less than a plugin, or just have the space, or want dedicated knobs, I'm inclined to go with that over one laptop. There are so many variables involved all are 'time', 'cost', 'place', and 'space'. Even in my own irrational acquisition, this weekend. Was dead set on another sampler -> Dommeow posts the discounted Model Ds -> "Well shit... guess I'm getting a model d"
@doommeow -> Did you get the other one? I made the offer on Ebay, it got rejected, someone bought it, then I got the one off reverb (all alto music).
I got 5 Star Feedback as a buyer (I always do  ) so I don't think they know I was the "Kyle" (that's not my name, I'm using it as a noun) that made the "not low ball" offer.

Idk though, I sort of think computing is the most human thing we can do, in as much as we are the only species that can lol

I've come to the conclusion that in order to do what I'm going for its got to primarily be done with a computer. Automation and editing is just too easy not to in the virtual environment.

My biggest issue with working with comouters for music is that for some reason I have a really inconsistent experience, settings changing and such, again...user error.

Hardware is just more fun and comforting though, and really does sound different and closer to what I'm after. I'm still tracking through and with plenty of hardware, just trying to get a little more consistent with staying in the digital domain after the initial composition and tracking steps.

This channel really is the shit... so much information and so inspiring.

Just for the record... I don't especially listen to the kind of music he demonstrates (I like it but, kind of like "turn-tablism" it's not exactly what I put on in my spare time). I use samplers probably more along the lines as K2000 (drones, sound mangling) and cause I love old school Jungle and DnB.

Probably one of the greatest samplers of all time which goes unrecognized, or unsung, by many is the Elektron Machinedrum-UW Mark Two. Whereas other samples perhaps sample one at a time, Machinedrum-UW can sample four at a time. Indeed, one may also resample whatever is playing on the Machinedrum at the moment in order to replay what is playing yet again to create special effects. These effects, which cannot be otherwise achieved, make the Machinedrum-UW a valuable sampler in any arsenal (except, perhaps, nuclear!). But now that I consider the 12-bit nature of the Machinedrum-UW sampler, I see that if one were to begin with a 24-bit source it would then become the half-life of that source when sampled into the Machinedrum-UW. This half-life, like the half-life of say, the element uranium, causes the sample to become MORE rather than LESS valuable. When one desires a certain grit or character, one does not reach for one's 24-bit samples. Rather, one grips one's 12-bit samples with both fists and vigorously declares one's triumph over so-called "fidelity." Therefore, when paired with the inimitable Elektron sequencer (no time in this essay to discuss the sequencer) the Machinedrum-UW Mark Two appears clearly at the top of the heap when it comes to sampling.

Here is an example of the Machinedrum-UW Mark Two sampler in action during a track I myself wrote, recorded, and mixed: https://immigrantbreastnest.com/track/a-haggard-ruckus

Thanks Mr. Sound boy King. Oddly enough I came across someone else giving similar praise to that model. I think it was in the context of using it as a drum machine.

Y. I've rocked one for ten years now. It's an exceptional drum machine but the sampling portion often gets overlooked. I've done a bunch of shows using it to live-sample vox and then manipulate the vox into percussion sounds on the fly. Very powerful + immediate device.

Samplers were already getting my attention before this thread. But pedge for teh budget. Should just work SP-202 and iPhone. Filtatron is probably as good as a resampling workaround is going to get.

Get the controller and a little mini lcd screen (like for a car). They'll help.
It's a fun sampler when it works.
I'm getting the mouse converter from the Brit. I come from a long line of hoarders so TVs with S-Video and composite out are AMPLE and multiplying in my world.
Found an old IBM Thinkpad at work with a floppy slot too so I can write floppies.
The controller is too expensive. I got this stupid thing with a bunch of other crap for $150. The stock mouse and controllers are like $100 each.
...I don't know. If anyone sees one for the cheap at their local flee markets... maybe hit a sista/brotha/shark up?

Should've kept mine and gave it to you. Think I sold my lcd, controller and s-330 for like 90+ shipping. The mouse replaces the controller though (iirc) and you don't need both. I don't know if they had a convertor at the time or at least I didn't know about it and the mice were impossible to find.

The controller has always been worth more than the actual unit. maybe easier to get it in a package with another s-330 or 550 (is that the right number? The bigger one). But with a mouse and screen I don't think you need it (haven't had it in 5 years and haven't seriously used one in probably 15).

I know you would have buddy!
The 555 is the larger one. The guys I brought it from today had a studio that was like... sampler heaven. They had a lot of stuff but it was stuff you can still find for reasonable prices... just a lot of it. There was an MC-202 (not a sampler) in the corner they probably coped when they were still like $200. They had the AKAI rack filters too. All cool stuff and most of it was again, attainable within reason (it wasn't like that other guy I told you about that had STACKS of OB-XA's and Rhodes Pianos).

Amen Brother! I thought it was one from the start though!
In other news... another archaic sampler no one wants... except for me popped up... at a price my stupid cheap ass was even willing to pay so... it all comes full circle.

Since this thread started... and coming to a close now... I have acquired my two dream samplers for less than a fraction of... I don't have a good example.
