Low-power amp, more volume?

Post by VREEEEVROOOOOW »

So if you've got a JC-60 and want to be louder, but also want to keep the exact sound you have coming out of those wonderful speakers, what's the cheapest way of doing that?

Hoping that's not the cheapest option :P

Not sure how a solid state amp like that reacts to boost pedals, and it's so obvious you probably already ruled it out for whatever reason...
But even something like a microamp would get you a ton of extra clean volume, no? :idk:
The boost mode on my fz-2 used to serve that exact purpose, and I'm sure there's plenty of other similar/better options out there.

Another equally obvious way to sound bigger: hook yer amp up to a a 4x12 cabinet, with the most efficient speakers that sound somewhat close that what's in your combo now...?

I don't see how the microamp would make the cacophony of noise any louder than the amp goes?

As for cabinets, yeah, that's what I think is the most likely option. But which ones? I run two different chains into the JC-60, if that matters...

I agree a cab would be your best bet, but you still can't expect a ton more volume without any change in the tone you're used to...

So would a 4X12 cab cost you that much more than upgrading to a JC-120 or JC-90? No idea about your local used prices for either of those amps, but if it were me I'd probably go that route.

There is a JC-120 on Finn.no for 3500 NOK, about the same as a second hand Marshall 1960 in Norway. :) you can find cheaper cabs, but if it is a shitty cab with bad speakers it won't give you more volume.

Yeah, that was exactly my point too...You'll need more than a stock Marshall 1960 type cabinet if you want the most possible volume increase, so a used JC-120 might make more sense :idk:

Just saw that JC-120 on Finn, yeah. I guess they're less expensive than I thought? Last time I looked (couple of years ago) I could only find them (used) in the 7K NOK+ range. Thanks for the advice.

Is there a preamp out that you could run through a quilter power amp plus cab? Or mic it and put it thru the PA?
