what's your favorite tremolo pedal?

Post by pigmaker »

I'm looking for a tremolo pedal to put in front of some vintage fuzz circuits.

I previously haven't even considered getting a trem so i have no idea what's out there and what's badass.

i had a vibutron years ago and that was awesome, but hard to find and expensive today

the Vox circuit always sound great to me, super choppy saw wave. Boss PN-2 is like the trem pedal, every cool guy seem to use it, although I have not tried one myself. They get kinda pricy tho. Ring modulators that go in the LFO range are really cool tremolos, you can get really whacky stereo effects with them cause it fucks with the polarity.

Harmonic tremolo is my No. 1 love tho, I am obsessed with the tremolo of some old Ace-Tone its super choppy and vibey, Have not found a good pedal to cop it which is a shame cause the amp smells like a toaster at working temp. The trem is all over this track:

Fulltone Supatrem 2 run in stereo through two amps with one really dark, one really bright. Most enveloping harmonic trem sound ever.

The Moog Minifooger Trem is my current fave. It spans many waveforms and rhythmic patterns.

I used to have the Strymon Flint, and the combo of trem and reverb is pretty amazing.

Then I moved to a Cusack Tao-a-Whirl which has 24 waveform options so does everything from standard Tremolo to some more complex and rhythmic patterns. I would say this one is way more feature rich, but I didn’t find it had quite the right sound. Hard to pinpoint, but something slightly lacking in the atmosphere and feeling.

I now have the Stonedeaf FX Tremotron which is pretty awesomen! Dual Tremolo, ability to do really high rates so you can get into ring mid territory, or really lush, deep and beautiful sound. I like it a lot, and at least for now, my trem search is over.

I do actually have a Source Audio Vertigo Tremolo too, that I bought around the same time as the Tremotron just to try out a more simple straightforward option. It’s a really great sounding trem too, it does standard, harmonic and bias (choppy Vox-like) but then you can also do some deep editing and switch out sounds via the Neuro App. It has trem chorus, flanger, Phaser, etc. Settings. I’ve got that one up in the BST forum for sale or trade if you’re interested.

Mid-Fi Electric Yggdrasil is doing very good in front of fuzz here. It's the first pedal in my chain.

I also have a Moog MF-Trem. Adjust rate up and it gets to the verge of ringmodish clang.
Which can be a fun time with fuzz. Expression control also.

Probably because that's a total PITA. I had a JHS Stutter Switch and loved it for that kind of thing in short bursts, but using it as a dedicated tremolo would have been impractical.
