I've been looking at this: http://www.zebranalogic.com/lfo.html over and over again. I think it might be a nice toy to screw around with but I just don't have the kind of money he's looking for. So I'm decided to do what good punk rockers do and diy something similar.
Now I do not have the skills to design such a thing at all. But here are my guesses about it: I would depart from an optical tremolo, kinda like this: http://www.freestompboxes.org/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=4616&p=54026
All that needs to be done would be to isolate the LED part of the circuit and add a brighter LED (probably). But in an ideal world I would have more parameters to adjust. Like: depth, speed, "choppiness", brightness. Also the different waveforms of the circuit I'm trying to rip off would be awesome. Square, Sine, Step for example. CV in would also be nice, for example on the choppiness control.
On the other hand the original seems to be using a pretty complex wave generator. From the little circuit bending I've tried I've come to love the use of touch pads to replace a resistor. Something like that on a switch would be the shit. I imagine the lamp to do crazy and erratic things just like a children's keyboard would do. That would mean using a "clock", whatever that means. But maybe i could rip one out of a children's keyboard and just stick a lamp where the speaker is..?
So, guys, you see I know zilch about this. Please help make my dream of screwing with this and my mushroom echo come true. (If it works I'm going to buy an eye of god too...)
