Convince me that I don’t hate chorus
Let’s just get this out of the way. I hate chorus. I do.
When I was a teenager I had a Marshall valvestate amp that had this shitty, chorus/flange effect, and I think that kind of ruined my understanding of chorus for a long time.
Recently, I’ve been thinking I should give chorus another chance. But fuck, I still kind of hate it I think. I have checked out the Julia pedal, and it’s ok. The somersault seems decent. The audio adventure lunge sounds cool, but seems to have some weird pre-Delay thing going on. Are there other sweet chorus pedals out there that might cure me of my distaste for chorus? Or will my pedalboard just remain a largely modulation-less place?
I hate phaser too, but I love the Dweller. I hate flanger and not even Pyramids can make me like them. Maybe chorus and I are just not meant to be?

The Paradox Effects Futura is an interesting deviation from vanilla chorus designs. It takes time to gain familiarity with some of its operational quirks, but rewards thereof are bountiful. The Earthquaker Devices Sea Machine can also produce non-standard chorus textures, but has more apparent delay lines than the Futura (kind of like how I recall the EHX Polychorus sounding in chorus mode).

Seems cool, pretty decent pedal. Confirmed that I hate flanger, but just don’t get chorus. Thanks for the suggestion.oscillofuzz wrote:Komorebi?

I actually should have included the Sea Machine in "chorus’ that I don’t despise" in my first post, as I've heard some settings on it that I could imagine fucking with.ck3 wrote:The Paradox Effects Futura is an interesting deviation from vanilla chorus designs. The Paradox pedals has some cool functionality. I am appreciating more and more envelope functions (is that what you call them?) that allow you to alter the effect with your picking dynamic.
I’m still not running out to buy a chorus, but maybe I’m warming to them a bit?
I really like the sounds in that initial 40 second Adventure Audio Lunge promo. But I can’t tell if 40 seconds is about as much as I can take or not. The other demo for that pedal is ok, but does seem to showcase some funny predelay stuff that i’m not crazy about.

What I like about it in the demo is that it's capable of those static settings that just add that metallic characteristic to your sound, as I've gotten kinda bored by predictable LFO-based modulation lately.Blood_mountain wrote:Seems cool, pretty decent pedal. I don't like '80s chorus but I like Small Clone tones. Maybe you're the same?

I used a Mr Black Vintage Ensemble through a stereo rig for a bit...truly incredible depth and detail.
In mono, it reminded me of every crappy 80's fake-sounding guitar tone that made me hate chorus in the first place.

Special low-frequency version.

I've softened on Phaser for sure, but I still don't love it. I love OBNE's Dweller, but that has a whole delay/repeater thing going on too. I had a vintage Mutron Phasor, and it sounded amazing, but not enough that I didn't sell it.oldangelmidnight wrote:I don't like '80s chorus but I like Small Clone tones. Maybe you're the same?

Re: Convince me that I don’t hate chorus
Roland/Boss Dimension chorus is worth exploring. If you’re made of money, t.c. 1210 rack is similar but generally better. SCF is good, but does not do the paired and opposing-motion voices that end up sounding more like animated detuning than CE-2 wobble.
Allan Holdsworth chorus better to your ear or still disgusting? Multi-voice with longer delay times, so less comb filter-y, and individual modulation per voice so less mechanical. Yamaha UD-Stomp and Magicstomp do this better than any pedal, and the later is still cheap.
Stereo is better for any of the above.
