The great fuzz depression

I just checked ebay, reverb, guitar center (I feel dirty everytime I say that name)... I think this is it. I think we are seeing lower than average resale value for extremely rare vintage fuzz pedals. the listings are still up on ebay for full price on vintage fuzz but they are just not selling at full price. they are selling for %30 off. also strange is that some pedals went UP! the FZ1-A went from the $150 to $250 range now totally selling like hot cakes at $395. not a single FZ1-A available for less than $300.

share your thoughts. maybe I am over exaggerating?

Even DOD stuff from the 80s cannot be found for cheap. Seems like the only cheap pedals are the Chinese knockoffs.

I think it's cyclical but it seems like the people with money are willing to spend it on pedals. And the sellers are willing to hold out for higher prices.

This! I checked out prices for the fx overdrive and the prices are ridiculous. It is to be expected though. As have been said: People are willing to spend. I have noticed a trend right now in "sleepers" getting jacked up to silly prices. That is living in the age of youtube demos. This happens all the time, sadly. Anyone remember when sunn model t's were undesirable junk?

I don't go on Reverb much, since I'm not in America the shipping price/time to Europe is prohibitive to me.

But on the used market here (in Norway) I have noticed a slight decline in vintage effects prices. At least like old EHX/Sovtek units, Shin-Ei, Ibanez, Colorsound.. there are some deals to be had. I usually don't go for vintage stuff but I might soon.

It's possible that the reverence for older classics is diminishing as the older musicians drop out of the scene. Those vintage pedals previously hoarded might also come back into circulation too, as older people drop out and divest themselves of gear, flooding or softening the market slightly. Certain pedals like Sovtek muffs probably took a price hit with the EHX reissues. Overall, prices seem to be up or holding steady on a lot of things. Try shopping for a Meatbox, they are $350. Boss FZ-2 are over $200, I was told. Ordinary DOD pedals are often like 50 bucks. Try pricing a 201 Phasor, an original or reissue. It depends a lot on what specific pedals you are looking at. Overall, I would say the market is not down, it's up. YMMV.

yes I did see the FZ-2 is going UP! why? this is unexpected. fender blender went down. dallas arbiter fuzz face went down. DAM holding on but there are not that many up for sale so hard to really say if the $800 DAM is still $800. sun face for $220 is a steal. sun face for $495 is what I think it is worth considering how great it is and how rare it is. both examples are up there right now.

It’s hard to gauge really specifically since you can’t see a lot of results from Craigslist/Kijiji - I see a lot of $400+ pedals in local deals. I see a lot of super overpriced shit on reverb not moving. Who knows what’s actually selling?

FZ-2 are way up - Russian Green Muffs are always high.

I guess clones are so exact and probably more reliable than the OFs when it comes to Muffs. Plus the market is so fucking oversaturated with Muffs and Klons and tubescreamers.

But for FZ-2 a clone is going to be be $250 or more a lot of the time and look stupid and frankly I’m holding out for an OG.

I collect DOD Death Metals and the OGs used to be $40 and now they seem to be way more expensive. Maybe because “someone” is running an Instagram tribute page and that shit is fucking TRENDING right now? I have 5. Or 6? And a thrash master and a metal maniac.

I agree there are too many HM-2 clones but I played the latest Lone Wolf Left Hand Wrath this week and it's killer. Super killer in fact.
Far exceeds a regular HM-2.

DOD Death Metal is a meme of harsh noise music. you can start a band with no guitar if you have death metal + contact mic. this is the fender strat of the harsh noise generation. you can use any high gain pedal but to be authentic with your noise shit there is specific shit.

Not that long ago, your only option for a good superfuzz was either a vintage one or a custom build clone. These days everyone and their grandma can find the schematic and parts online to solder together a fuzz pedal. The boutique pedal market is saturated, and even brands like EHX, EQD and Maxon are selling their take on the Klon Centaur, FM-2 fuzz, Beebaa, etc...

In the past, collectability wasn't the only reason to hunt down something like an Ibanez Standard Fuzz. These days you'll get a reliable/quie/upgraded/truebypass'd version for less than $200, so most guitarists don't NEED to spend a lot of money on a rare pedal to get their fuzz fix

I will say, the FX 86 does something special for harshness that no other pedal can.... I use two (and an HM-2 and Gonkulator!) for my bass setup and it cops the sickest, harshest, grimiest tones I simply cannot get anywhere else. I buy any that I see because they fuckin' break so easily and I need back ups.
