analog delays, so many of these god damn things
just throw my names my way, please
i don't want to buy a fucking analogman axrodx252 or whatever the fuck, please save me from that fate
what i care about, and the only 2 things i care about:
#1) analog. my entire signal path is analog and i like that, want to keep it that way
#2) not super clean. most of the ones that have been recommended to me, probably the typical ones you are thinking of, when i listen to them i think "man this is too clean." i like the semi-shitty decaying trailing stuff. in moderation, of course. isn't that what a digital delay is for, anyway? like an exact-copy-delay? and a lot of analog delays i hear - yeah, they're super famous and successes, and what do i know about any of this shit - they just sound like a digital delay with a lil dollop of low pass filter. man, fuuuuuck that.
the closest thing i have found to what i consider ideal:
the malekko id-300/600 series aka e300, e600
now here's the thing.
man it's so close but it's a little too heavy handed - on the repeats and how affected they are. it's so damn close.
i think i actually prefer the yellow (bright) ones but i think the bright/dark are pretty similar, it's just that one has a roll off
here's the delays i have listened to, and i'm not feelin em:
(i could change my mind on any of these, of course, and i keep changing my mind on these delays a lot)
carbon copy - i actually like it more than almost anything else but it's too clean for me. and you know... the whole thing about having heard it so many goddamn times in my life
maxon ad900, ad999 - getting warmer, but too clean, kinda sterile or something
retro sonic analog delay - hey i actually like this one too but something about the high's or the eq profile makes it a no go for me
boss dm-2/dm-2w - i dont get the obsession
chase bliss tonal recall - oft recommended, and oft i would throw it out the fucking window if i owned one
maybe what i really want is an echorec or echoplex or space echo emulator type pedal eh? eh? EH?
well i've got a mountain of pedal recommendations left to go through, i thought i might save a lot of time by getting pointed in the right direction here

Rubberneck. Still curious about 616 Dark and 616 LoFi, but unless a steal falls in my lap, unlikely to feel the need to go there.

shit i was going to mention something.Gone Fission wrote:Rubberneck. Still curious about 616 Dark and 616 LoFi, but unless a steal falls in my lap, unlikely to feel the need to go there.
when i heard the lofi's, to me they just sound like the same delay but with a light ring modulator added to the signal. i hate em.
i almost bought a 616 dark the other day. it's not bad.
but then i found a demo with the 616 dark next to the id-600 dark. and i realized, i was wrong, the 616 dark was not better than the id-600 dark.
they are actually significantly different.
my first round of going through the malekko line of delays, i had landed on the id-300 for bright, and 616 dark for dark delay.
so i let that californiadreamin guy's id-600 dark sell for like 170 on ebay the other day because i didn't think i wanted it.
the id-600 bright went for like 280 which is preposterous.
i had also been looking at the synthmonger pulsemonger he had up, but then i found out the synthmonger guy is a total piece of shit, and also it went for way, way, way too much. in the last 24 hrs it went from 47$ and closed over 150
i got way off track there
i will check out the rubberneck, thank you.n
not the first time it has been mentioned, i need to give it a fair shake

Re: analog delays, so many of these god damn things
Buy a Rubberneck.
The things that make analog delays sound the way they do is the low pass filtering required to tame clock noise. Everyone does it a little differently and it's certainly a function of the BBd architecture used.. the best sounding all have short delay times, because they obviously degrade more the more steps in the delay chain.
The Rubberneck has a pretty sweet mix of dark filtering and some cool modulation and shit. Plus it's cheap AF

Re: analog delays, so many of these god damn things
Check out the Maxon AD-80. Plenty of dirt and character. Absolutely love mine (have an AD-9 as well, but that is a bit cleaner, which I assume is not your thing). Haven't tried it, but the AD-900 is supposed to be similar but with longer delay times. AD-999 sounds way cleaner, so while it is a great delay it would probably not fit your requirements.
I've also had the Retro-Sonic, which is great but fairly clean. It's a DM-2 clone, and the DM-2 I had left me with the same impression. Also had the 616 Lofi which is very dirty and cool, but maybe a bit much for regular use given your comments.

Sounds like you may not want an analog delay if none of those sound right to you. A PT2399 might be what you seek.

I just got a Moby Dick V2.. and it's the closest to analog I've heard really.. it has extreme filtering, modulation, lo-fi knob which degrades more.. But yeah it's a 2399. Tap tempo... good feature for not too much.

+++1 on the Rubberneck. Super fantastic.
Otherwise have you ever tried a Diamond Memory Lane 2? Also killer.
I'm partial to the Malekko bright delay but you hardly ever see them for sale.

The Xvive Memory is a decent option with adjustable grit and modulation that is sometimes around $80 new on Amazon.

The ID-600 yellow. That sounds better to me than the dark FWIW.pigmaker wrote:shikawkee wrote: I'm partial to the Malekko bright delay but you hardly ever see them for sale.

If you know where one is for sale let me know! That said I have the Rubberneck and two Memory Lane 2's and I can justify having both for sure but the Rubberneck is a no-brainer at the recent prices I've seen.
I paid $164 before Digitech went belly up and it's still worth it.

yeah i just got done watching both PGS demo vidoes of the rubberneck and now i want both it and the carbon copy deluxe lol.
my board is not big enough. this is clear to me.
this is what changed my mind so quickly on the rubberneck, from "that's cool" to "i must get one"...
the ability to run a loop out and process just the repeats.
lol, is this a common thing and i just dont know about it?
the add on digitech footswitch is pretty much the icing on the cake...
an id-600 yellow just went on ebay for almost $300... it was $77 about 24 hrs earlier.. i was going to buy it at under 200
i just listened to all the malekko delays last week and the bright 300/600 was the one that stood out for me... preferred it to the dark as you did...
same guy sold a bright and dark id-600 and the bright went for almost 300 like i said, and the dark went for below 200, which is the reverse of what i expected, as all the hype seems to be around the dark, and i dont see anyone talking about the bright id-600... so i thought i was all set
why do i still want a CC deluxe then? the sound. it's got a certain grossness that tickles my pineal gland, man

The loop on the Rubberneck is awesome. You can do crazy things with it. Try a ring mod plus compressor after it in the loop. Or a glitch pedal. Killer.

Re: analog delays, so many of these god damn things
the answer is the rubberneck. the answer to this thread. the answer to everything. EVERYTHING. i've read manuals. i've watched demo vids, the same ones multiple times. (btw, if you want to know about the rubberneck, the andy videos with PGS - there are 2 - are fucking on point)shikawkee wrote:The loop on the Rubberneck is awesome. You can do crazy things with it. everything i bitched about in the first post, about how all these other delays are too clean, or not clean enough, or whatever the fuck, the rubberneck is so god damn tweakable. the answer was right there staring me in the face if i had only taken the time to mix some metaphors and listen to the fucking demos.
thank you people of ILF-earth for showing me the way, the truth, and the DOD light
fuck the carbon copy deluxe btw, doesnt hold a fucking candle to the rubberneck in terms of functionality/features, and it costs roughly 50% more on the used market
