Re: The Netflix/Hulu/Prime Thread

Haven’t been watching the current season but saw an apt critique of GOT books and TV pointing out that the awesome thing at first was turning the Tolkien just-universe-after-adversity thing on its head, culminating with the Red Wedding. Then the thread is lost and Jon becomes a pretty damned conventional Aragorn stand-in. Yawn. There are a couple possible saves that may have already been foreclosed by this point. The Night King wins. Circe wins. The Hound is the prince who is promised and the founder of a new Stark-esque dynasty with the Mountain as a new Night King. I dunno, just not the hereditary savior riding in to save the universe on his/her hetero dragon life mate. If that’s all we get, maybe everyone should have just died at the Red Wedding.

BTW, I’m not saying everything HBO touches is shit. I’m just saying I’ve lost faith in their management of “big” shows because I’m not sure they truly know how to do them. They still do some fucking great TV. The Night Of, Big Little Lies, Sharp Objects. Slices of more normal life they seem to have down.

Hrrmmmm...I guess I would counter with Boardwalk Empire, Carnivàle and Deadwood that were pretty fantastic period pieces that held it together very well until it all had to end because of budget constraints or other unforeseeable conflicts. Putting together and keeping shows on the network and under budget, due to so many factors surrounding large marquee casts with fame & contracts is insanely difficult and complex. Sometimes I think NF used all the lessons HBO taught through their own failures and innovated the "3 and out" style of TV series production.

I only find about 1/4th of them funny. Should I get my head examined?

I feel like Tim & Eric, Limmy, Eric Andre, etc, have pushed way past this level of bizzaro comedy making this seem outdated.

I've been thinking about watching Barry, since my friend lets me leech GoT off his account, is it as good as some say? The only other show I watch now is Chernobyl, it'sgreat.

I've watched a few episodes of Barry and so far it's great - give it a try. Agree on Chernobyl.

I feel like only some of it being good is a part of sketch comedy. :idk: And I can definitely see why it wouldn't appeal to everyone. I didn't laugh at all of them but a high enough proportion I loved it overall.

Totally agree other people are doing great stuff! Limmy in particular is great.

Absolutely, and of course it's subjective anyways. Definitely better than a lot of stuff out there.

I think the best comedy is always subjective, I laugh like a drain at Community as my wife just gives me that 'really?' face.

Mini binge of Robotech because I was really impressed with the Mecha when I was seven. Horrid. Lynn Minmei is the Jar Jar Binks of Robotech.

Yep.
I remember loving that show as a kid. It really did not hold up when rewatching.
That's not even to mention how each "season" is comprised of totally different animes that have been slightly rewritten/translated to make the show seem somewhat more coherent.

Yellow Dancer>Lynn Minmei. Also, Prime video has all three of the original shows spliced together into Robotech in their entirety. Subtitles were a bit wonky the last time I attempted to watch Super Dimension Fortress Macross and Genesis Climber Mospeada just barely kept my interest, but I may give both another go after finishing The Tick.
