Video Synths?

Has anyone here used a video synth like the C&G Etc for visuals during a show? My bandmate and I are looking at one for our post hardcore band but its tough to tell how it would react to either a mic picking up the whole band or just guitar input from heavy riffy guitar playing.

Have had an eye on the ETC for awhile but haven't even had a chance to mess with the Vidiot I've had for a year now.

Have lately played around a good bit with Resolume and it's Audio Reactive parts work in a more obvious manner when reacting to kick and snare. Heavy guitar, with its lack of transients, would not necessarily react in an obvious manner.

This was another option I was thinking about. Mic on the kick/snare might be better for overall dynamic response.

Why would you ever do that? I mean, I think you would regret it sitting there blasting yr eyes with a bunch of flashing patterns.

I realize I'm talking to someone more electronically adept than me, couldn't you maybe start with something like this (if u already haven't) and go nuts from there?

Or maybe consider both/and. Have both running to an ab or aby. I am finding it useful on the guitar when it is clean, picking and the transients have a better attack or when it swells.

I haven't tried the ETC, but I have a Gieskes 3TrinsRGB+1C, and have played around with oscilloscopes, and other sound-reactive video stuff. The a/v synchronization will be more apparent to the audience if you split the signal of whatever instrument you think should be leading the pattern (usually bass drum or guitar), and send one line to the video synth. I use a wireless dongle. Using the full-mix will just give you kinda spastic peak-signal stuff which is more complex, but less interesting. As a general rule, slower, more subtle changes tend to be more pleasing for the eyes to follow, unless you specifically intend to overwhelm the senses, but people can get fatigued.

I've been using a Critter and Guitari Black and White Video Scope and a BPMC Premium Cable for awhile now, but I'd really like to upgrade the Video Scope to an ETC or Vidiot. Really fun to have some visuals sync'd to the music I'm playing.

I send the output of my mixer to the Video Scope and it seems to work pretty well. Not sure how it would go in a whole band setup, though

I was quite upset when i saw they apparently discontinued the b&w videoscope before i got around to buying one. if you upgrade and want to move it on...

I'll keep that in mind, but it likely won't be happening for awhile. I was pretty disappointed too. My original plan was to get a couple of their Video Scopes and some sort of video mixer (probably something modded by BPMC). Then I could send different instruments to different patterns and colours and mix it all together
