NPD: 16 second clone!

Always been intrigued by these, never messed with one.

What's wrong with just ehx reissue though? Assuming a local-ish deal for one would cost me less than what the typical inflated reverb prices

They discontinued those about a decade ago and they sell for $450+ used. The Expedition pedal is right around $300.

As I said on another forum, the Expedition, while super cool, is very lo-fi past a certain point. Even at 16 seconds. Just FYI.

I'd love something to replace my Ditto X2 with something that's got more drone/glitch/noise capabilities. I'm not into layering "normal" riffs. Sample rate is less of a concern than my budget is, otherwise something like a RP Tensor would've been worth a closer look. So I wonder if something like the old digitech PDS-2000 would be less of a 2-trick pony than the Ditto X2

Not to discourage the chase of new and hard to get gear but you can do some pretty cool delay on delay sounds with the DD500 (if you have 30 minutes to put into creating a pair of patches)which is right in the middle of the Ditto and the Tensor, EU pricewise.

(I only bring this up because I made this clip for EA as an attempt to approximate what he wanted to get out of one of these things. The first delay is more standard than glitches but you can do loads of glitchy stuff too:

Yeah it can do 10 seconds of SOS. Pretty cool. I had one.

I find it to be about what you actually what to accomplish and how you want to accomplish it. The Tensor only has 4 seconds, these have 16, so not even close to be comparable in that way. For me I find it is all about how you are going to use a pedal as to what may work best for you, this has led me to trying out tons of pedals because I can see a video and hear sounds and think "oh that sounds nice, I like what that's capable of." But playing that same pedal and doing things the way that is comfortable for me personally doesn't always feel wa ith how that pedal is laid out, formatted or otherwise. Personally speaking I have found certain pedals easier for me to get out of them what I personally want the way I want and others more cumbersome to do the same with. I really like the Maneco, it makes sense to me and has a small footprint. The reissue of the EHX does have the annoying click you can't eliminate, and I find the layout to be less than friendly to me for what I personally want. And I think after playing hundreds of pedals that can do similar things, several of them may be great pedals but I am finding some are totally what I want and some just aren't for me!

Yeah, totally agree. That's also why it's hard to rely on just demos and reviews, or even brief test drives. Unlike a Boss overdrive, these more experimental glitchy modulation delay effects can have a pretty steep learning curve and a huge range of different sounds and applications. It's a good thing almost that I'm forced to limit myself to only the more affordable/available options out there. It's hard enough as it is to pick something based on just other people's opinions and a handful of yt demos.

I have to share this with you guys cuz this is too good to be true. I've finally ended a several decade-long gas by pulling the trigger on an original Ehx 16s digital delay...

And the pedal is just FUCKING AMAZING!!!
Of course there's the Bill Frisell/Nels Cline pitch-delay thing, the sound on sound, etc... but there's also what people never tell you about it: the 16s delay does oscillate, a big, fat oscillation. Man, when you move that time slider it feels like the earth is moving! (I thought digital delays were not supposed to oscillate, but like the ps2, the 16s does oscillate. By the way it has the warmth of analog delays, so go figure...)

And since there's modulation, you get the most beautiful vibrato (with the 2 different time sliders and the span of depth & rate, you get so many subtleties), and a fat chorus à la Small clone. This device feels like a multi-effect pedal.

But the best thing about it is that, when you start messing with 16 sec of delay, and looping, and turning your loop into something else, and going back to delay, and adding modulation etc.. well, there's no end to it, the pedal is always inspiring new ideas and so the controls keep taking on a new meaning all the time. This feeling that the pedal is not limited to a number of functions -that you could master once and for all- but to the contrary, that it keeps opening doors endlessly, is so rare... you dont come across such pedals everyday.
It was a long wait and a shitload of money, but this piece of gear man....
