FY-2 Fuzz and good clones

Recently interested in picking up an FY2 clone. The Watson tends to be $$$ but the EQD Terminal and Solidgoldfx Sasori are more affordable. Is it worth spending more to get the Watson or a Fredric’s Super Unpleasant Companion?

Since everyone seems to be after FY-2's at the moment, I might as well throw my tiny hat in the ring... :surprise:






FY-2 is my jam, so I had to make one, but I never want to tread on any other builders toes, especially here in the UK (Pigeon FX and Fredric Effects) and so I want to put something out there that offers something vaguely original, so I put a gate switch. With it on, and the mids bumped, you get an FY-2 that plays a little nicer with chords and cuts through more.

I don't have a problem with the lack of headroom, but apparently that's a thing so there's a post-boost in there. Typically a straight LPB-1 spec boost shaves off a tiny, tiny bit of high-end so I worked from a more refined schematic to retain it, and it sounds identical to my vintage FY-2.

Sorry for being a whore. I've not got started on the rest of the batch so they're not for sale yet, and I'm not 100% happy with the fairly bland face-plate, but still.


Anyway....

For the money, you can't go wrong with the Fredric Super, since you're getting two pedals in one and a swanky enclosure.
EQD Terminal is really nice, but a touch dark for my taste. The two tone controls are useful but quite subtle.

For something similar to the FY-2 I love the Basic Audio Zippy. It retains most of the skank but is more open-sounding, and so it's a little more 'musical' and versatile as a result.

I'll add another +1 for Fredric Effects stuff. I have the Deeply Unpleasant Companion, and it rips. It gives my bass a really metallic honk that I quite enjoy.

I had the Fredric Unpleasant Companion but sold it, a little regret there. It sounded rad just not what I was into at the time.

Catalinbread Merkin could be an option. Found myself lowkey gasing a for it, may be able to snag a well-used one next week. In the meantime I'm breadboarding a clone. Though it's apparently based on a fuzzrite, I've gotten sounds very reminiscent of the Unpleasant Companion, dependent on texture pot/cap values and gain staging between the three transistors. From what I've heard in demos the Merkin has a wild sweep on the texture pot, so there's probably an FY-2-like setting to be found.

The Merkin is a fuzzrite, and funnily enough, the Fuzzrite (along with the Orpheum) are the basis for the FY-2 circuit.

Looks awesome man I think the "bland" face plate is classy & more appealing to a wider audience, personally.
