What next: overdrive or boost?

Post by Smarty »

Hi all, I feel that I need something to give a bit of grit to my base tone. Not sure if I should get an overdrive like the Nobels ODR-1 or a boost that has eq and gain controls, like a TC Spark Booster or similar. Current pedals: Mojo Hand FX Socrates, Pro Co RAT and Blakemore Effects Deus Ex-Machina.

What do you think would be the better play? Can the boost do the job of an OD?

Just turn your amp up and your pedals down? Some boosts and overdrives overlap more than others. I have been really into the colorsound power boost/overdriver. It is a clean boost but its ridiculous

I agree, this is a great suggestion since its a very different flavour from OPs other dirt

Anything DOD 250 based is great at adding grit IMO. It's very different than a Rat, but I'm not familiar with your other two drives.

EQD Westwood - it's cheating to use a video by Reverb Andy, but hey...

My Westwood is pretty much always on.

If we're talking "grit" as in pushing the front end of a loud clean tube amp...A cheap microamp or even something like an mxr eq pedal will do the trick imo :idk:

I guess it takes the right amp though, but imo it's the best way to get that sligtly pissed off tone that makes notes bounce of your fretboard and makes yer guitars sing with endless sustain. It's the oldest trick in the book, I don't get why it took me so long to discover that this approach slays the sound of a Rat through a quiet amp

Plenty of cheap options out there if you want to rely more on your pedal though. I'm really digging my Dod Gunslinger. Stacks nicely with other dirt, has an eq that actually works, and it never gets muddy or noisy.

Oh and entirely different, not sure if it's your thing, but I have to mension this: Harmonic Percolator. Far from a clean boost, but it's underrated as a low gain drive, it's really a lot more than just 'Shellac in a box'.

I'm a recent Perc convert. They're fantastic little boxes
