Belated NPD: Two Custom Wolf Computers! (Certainly Intense)

Post by V_____ »

Ok, as promised (though a little late) I made a (lengthy) demo of my new Mellowtone Pedals.

Anyway, the story behind these is Eric and I had talked about building me a two channel/stereo wolf computer a long time ago and after a lot of troubleshooting and trips back and forth, we ended up making the original pedal into two separate custom Wolf Computers. I think Eric and I decided to call them Alpha Wolf Computer and Beta Wolf Computer.

These Wolf Computers have some neat features that the regular ones do not, like:
6 Knobs:
Volume
Fuzz
Bias
Sag
Fine (Fine tuning of sag voltage)
(Pre)Boost
Independent Boost and Fuzz circuits.
Expression Input to control Sag/Voltage
Spiffy Diptych Artwork
Compute (instead of bypass) Switch

The result? An easier to use, more versatile, and really cool-sounding fuzz pedal that has a pre-boost so you can have a much wider range of gain/tonal options.
Oh and, since there's two of them, you can bet I'm going to run them in stereo.

Part one is just an introduction, so skip to part two if you don't care about that and just want to hear the pedals.

Part 2 (The beginning of the actual playing part  ). Here you get to hear some of the lighter sounds these things can do and some of the more classic wolf computer sounds, too.

Edit: Part 3 is up now.

Oh yeah, there's a picture too. I'll have to upload that...

You know, I realized I didn't demo the expression input control...well I guess I'll have to do that eventually.

An interesting side usage for that input is putting whatever photo-resistor you want in there or plugging in other values of potentiometer for even finer control.

Hmm...I was thinking, do you think the wolf computer's clean setting sounds the way it does cause it's acting as a compressor?

Yes, that is amazing - the Great Wolf. They have exactly the things I want more of on a Wolf CPu. I want one. A lot.

That was pretty damn amazing. I love what you're able to do with the fine control. And it's good to see someone touting the overdrive capabilities of the Wolf - obviously people know about the freakout oscillations, but I love the OD too!

i was just wondering what is the difference b/w the alpha & the beta & would you have preferred to have had it in the binary fuzz prototype enclosure if that would have been possible or are you happy w/ the way it turned out.

The Alpha and Beta are both identical except for the graphic on the front (which is actually a neat diptych if you cant tell from the video). I'm very happy with the way they turned out and I think it's probably a little more functional for them to be the way they are, since the original didn't have stomp switches for the boosts and they were tied into the wolf computer circuits so you could not use them independently. They take up a bit more room as separate units than they did as a combined unit (although not very much, actually). They also look slightly less mad scientistesque this way, but I'd rather have the functionality than that, so I'd say I'd rather have them the way they are now.

Of course, I'd still love to make some kind of stereo wolf computer that takes one input and puts out two outputs or has the option to mix them both back down into mono (which I can actually do by using some of my other pedals). I suppose I should probably make a demo of that sometime, huh?
