Hi chaps, the subject line sounds like a crossword clue, but it's actually a straightforward request. This seems to be the place to ask.
I'm looking for a weird fuzz for a very specific application. The fuzz will live in the fx loop of an EHX Superego or sometimes a Seymour Duncan Vapor Trail. It will add gnarly interesting textures to processed sounds in the background while I play largely clean over the top. Obvious issues:
1. Given the involvement of the Superego, I don't want something that will be very sensitive to dynamics
2. Modulation or some kind of time-based variation will be good for livening things up
3. A blend control will be an advantage, as will a low-noise circuit (hiss and clock noise aren't appropriate)
4. I like bitcrush or synth fuzz sounds, although I'm not wedded to them. Not interested in octave-down since I will have a Boss OC-3 doing other low-end stuff.
I've looked at very many options without finding The One. Favourites so far have been: Shoe Pixel (good synthy sounds, lacks time-based); Gojira Noise Ensemble (love the time-based variation but fear it's going to be noisy); PLBR Pizzacrusher (approve the added sample-and-holdish functions but found the core fuzz sounds a bit one-dimensional).
I will mention that I really like the thinking behind the Mid-Fi Glitch Computer but the circuit as implemented is too raucous for my applications -- it's impossible to imagine a GC providing textured wallpaper, which is pretty much what I need.
All suggestions gratefully recd.

Weird fuzz recommendation, unusual criteria?

RMA Mudlark. Or if you can find a dirty doper (works really well in feedback loops but may no be quiet enough). Mudlark is a good middle ground.
Ugly Face
Ring mod! It can been fuzzy, synthy, and/or octave up depending on the harmonics/signal you feed in.
It's kind of hard because a lot of fuzzes are input dependent and function differently after a buffer.
EQD Erupter, John Hollis or Montreal Assembly Crash Sync/your and you're.
May not work as well in a buffered loop:
LAL 88

Ugly face variant with LFO sounds like what I would be trying first, and then every ring mod, the DBA space ring being a personal favorite for loops.

Thinkin' the same! Space ring would probably be a good choice.BetterOffShred wrote:Ugly face variant with LFO sounds like what I would be trying first, and then every ring mod, the DBA space ring being a personal favorite for loops.

Fairfield Circuitry - Unplesant Surprise?
I once tried it in the loop of a Moog delay and it was great.

Bitquest or Data Corrupter would be my first thought for this. Also gives a ton of different effects stacked with the pad from the Superego.Paul_C wrote:BitQuest ?

MF Drive is my favorite thing ever with the SE. Makes the pad richer while having enough texture to bring out really interesting movement in the overtones. Can modulate its filter with an expression pedal, 8-step or similar, too. I also have a Glitch Computer and an original Uglyface. Too hard to tame in this context, imo.

Thx guys. All suggestions gratefully recd. Particularly taken with PLL subthene (I hadn't realized this linking factor between fuzzes I found interesting). I will update thread when board is built to provide further, ah, feedback. NP.

Nine of Sword has a pair of very cool oscillo-fuzz, for a really fair price!
