Help me find my perfect FUZZ pedal
So I've been told this is the place to find the most knowledgeable fuzz freaks. I want to find a particular fuzz pedal, but I don't know exactly how to classify it. A Super Fuzz clone perhaps? IDK, I'll list my requirements and lets see what you recommend. I already own an Amptweaker Tight Fuzz Jr. and a DOD Carcosa. They're both great, but I'm looking for a particular really gnarly, yet still versatile fuzz. I've got tons in mind, there's so many good ones. Chances are whatever you recommend I'll at least know of it, I just need pointed in the right direction.
My ideal fuzz pedal would have these attributes:
- 2 or 3 band EQ
-Bias (or some other wacky) control
- Range from gnarly (sputtery/gated) or smooth (thick and grindy)
- Tons of gain (good for Doom Metal)
- Look cool ("Heavy Metal" look or horror/sci-fi/spooky themes or vintage look, etc.)
- Built well (preferably not everything on one PCB)
- Under $240 (obviously, the cheaper the better)

Re: Help me find my perfect FUZZ pedal
I've found that you don't want "high" gain fuzz for doom unless you don't care about any note clarity (which is obv a matter of taste). It's more about volume, pickups, and amp. And the lower your tuning the less gain you want in a pedal as well, again, unless super muddy doom is what you want. Some of the heaviest doom stuff out there is just p90s into a medium gain fuzz or OD into a loud clean amp - like a fuzz face, Rat (run medium gain), OCD, etc.
What pickups and amp do you have?

That's a great point, I'll keep that in mind. My current humbucker guitar (LTD Snakebyte) has the EMG Het Set and my Strat has Texas Specials. My amp is a Fender Machete combo, but I also go direct using a Tech 21 Blonde Sans Amp pedal.adamajah wrote:I've found that you don't want "high" gain fuzz for doom unless you don't care about any note clarity (which is obv a matter of taste). Welcome to the rabbit hole...
Seriously, there's really no short cut here. Buy and flip a bunch of different pedals based on yt clips and ilf recommendations
I'll second that comment about high gain not being the key to a good doom tone though, there's a good chance that most of the bands you like just rely on their amps and a rat or a boss overdrive or something...
Anyway, check out the Clusterfuzz. It has tonebender pedigree I think, and it's versatile as fuck.
I'm partial to superfuzzes too. Wouldn't call them versatile though. An FZ-2 cuts through the mix like a mahfakka. Plenty of clones out there.
Your best option probably won't tick all the boxes, your perfect fuzz pedlol may come with a single tone control and lame graphics

^^^This
The Unpleasant Surprise has been my go-to fuzz for gnarly + clarity. No tone control, no gain control, just some switches and a gate and volume control. I'm not using it as it was probably intended (I've never heard anyone call it Transparent before, but it kinda is)
Took me 5-6 years to get here, and it's my third one, AND I still want more fuzz. Good luck buddy!
