Chorus/Detune/Double Tracking

What’s out there that’s cool? If at all possible I want the hair metal/thrash thing, I’m not really concerned with LoFi tones or anything. I’ve considered a Boss CE-2w, CH-1, etc..., the Walrus Julia, the MXR Micro and full-size, and the little micro CS-9. What am I missing? Tiny is better because there’s a huge chance this doesn’t get used much.

For that 80s goodness you want the Boss CE-2 or the Ibanez CS9

I'm kinda stoked on the OBNE Reflector, but it's got some delay/verb built in that might be unwanted.

The DigiTech Luxe may be a viable option. It's standard size, but new units can often be found for the price of a cheaper mini pedal. The Luxe does 90's glitz, glam, and gaze equally well. For 80's, chorus will be your friend, and The Valeton CH-10 is a decent (though not 100% accurate) mini knockoff of the Boss CE-2.

This is the type of information I need. Also yeah that’s super high on my list because it’s cheap. I may try the little micro Ibanez thing because it’s also cheap, but I love MXR stuff.

The boss super chorus is awesome because people are basically giving them away, plus they have a tone knob which i like. The tone knob on my arion chorus is super useful, idk if its at all similar to the boss. The hardwire chorus looks nice, it has has a tri-chorus mode which is what i think of as 80s metal chorus. The chorus on yamaha spx units is pretty nice too. If you wanna be really legit hair-metal you could get an A/DA preamp, they had a built in chorus and are the amps for 80s metal

Boss CH-1 was my second pedal. Think it was still the 80s. Very frosty sounds possible.

Don't neglect the possibilities of a flanger with the resonance/feedback cranked down. I wouldn't have put it past a lot of metal/thrash guys in the 80s--willing to buy a flanger but not a chorus but not needing the jet full time. Memory Man was the Andy Summers/The Police chorus sound early on. Nice thing is flanger chorus usually sounds a lot less chorus-y because the delay time range is a bit different.

Detune is great. I dig the single voice of my Boss PS-5. Digitech Luxe is one voice. iStomp detune is two voices on its detune algo, so you can do the + and - stereo spread trick ala Van Hagar. The pitch algo in the Yamaha Magic Stomp can do the "Pitch C" stuff that 80s LA rack heads love, but it's pretty slow--a bit of delay is built into the algorithm to help deglitch the shift. (Very un-ILF, I know.)

Magic Stomp also has the Yamaha "Symphonic" algorithm, which is a multi-voice chorus-y thing that has always seemed a little flange-y to me.

Are we talking single or low voice chorus/detune-y stuff or are we talking record-advance rack stuff with multi voices? For the later, Rocktron Intellifex is pretty cheap for 8 voice Holdsworth-ish chorus (as is the Magic Stomp). Modern easy-button pedal version would be a Digitech Nautila.

Oh yeah the flange thing is great, when I had a flanger thats how I used it.
