Timeline Vs Echosystem?

Post by Blood_mountain »

Hi Pals,

Moving this thread to General Gear...

I’m in the market for a new multi-delay, and am wondering if people with experience with both can chime in on them? I like weird delays, good tape sounds, not super concerned about midi, stereo, etc. I like that you can ise the “hardware insert mode” like an effect loop on the echosystem, but maybe that’s possible with the timeline as well? I'm heavily leaning towards the Echosystem currently for a couple of reasons - I've really enjoyed the video demos, have played it very briefly, like the ambient, stutter and reverb/delay settings (I'm wanting to replace my Avalanche Run), but have honestly had pretty limited exposure to either pedal. I have a Big Sky, so from a functionality perspective, I'd be more familiar with the Timeline.

Let me know your thoughts!

Thanks!

The Echosystem weird sounds come at more face value. You can build lots of interesting stuff in the Timeline but its less obvious how to make it. You can run an effects loop on the Timeline with the flip of a little switch on the back. I personally prefer the preset management on Strymon stuff a lot more.

I'd go with the Timeline if you don't have an issue to be 1 step closer to join a cult.

If you're considering other options, take a look at the DD-500, it covers weird and tape stuff better than TL and ES, IMO. It also has an fx loop, stereo looper and all the goodies of typical Boss delays.

Never tried the Echosystem. But I used to have a TimeFactor and now since 2-3 years I'm a really happy Timeline abuser.
I find also the TL preset management really well done (that was one my points upgrading from the Timefactor). The sounds are stellar, if you're into ambient and such, there's a lot to work and noise with.

I bought an Echosystem & a Timeline at the same time. I did a side-by-side comparison and consistently found the Echosystem's algorithms to be livelier & warmer. The Timeline's banks just seemed sterile and artificial when I was switching back & forth. I flipped the Timeline immediately and still use the Echosystem.

They seemed to be polar opposites in terms of effort and rewards. With the Echosystem, it seems nearly impossible to get a bad sound. The opposite could be said for the Timeline. You could put in significant work, yet fail to reach an ideal setting. I need stuff that's intuitive and fun, so it was an easy decision for me to stick with the Empress. You've probably already used or ruled out the Nemesis, but I'd advocate for that, before I'd recommend a Timeline.

Thanks for the response! I ended up picking up an Echosystem today, for a few reasons. Same thing, I did a side by side with the timeline and while I didn't have a ton of time to spend with them, came to the conclusion that I just liked the sounds better and more of them on the echosystem than on the timeline. I REALLY liked the lo-fi setting on the timeline, so hopefully I can dial in something similar on the echosystem. Any tips?
