Oh no, not another delay thread.

Post by Dowi »

So, as the restyling/downsizing of the board goes on (and I’m currently going through the different ODs you guys suggested), it’s time for the delay section.
I always had two delays on the board: a classic “analog voiced” one, and a more tweakable one.
Requirements are the same: top mounted Jacks, small footprint, reasonably priced (220-230€ish tops).

#1 ANALOG:
As far as the analog delay goes now I’m fine with the EKKO 616, I might not even take it out if don’t find anything else w/ top mounted jacks.
I don’t use the modulation section (but I would use it with minimal vibrato-like settings it if the knobs weren’t that small).
Tap tempo not needed.

#2 OTHER:
Things I like: filters, tape/lofi, crazy resonances and rigmod sounds, modulation (if tweakable), fuzzy repetitions. Currently not really interested in glitch, pitch-shifting and delays with incorporated reverb. Tap tempo is not needed but if it’s there I could use it.
I know there is plenty of this stuff around but I’m willing to hear some fresh ideas, plus I’m having a hard time finding small stuff with top mounted jacks.
In my radar now:
- DBA Micro Dream (would love the Echo Dream 2 but it’s too pricey and probably too big)
- Hungry Robot The Wash (yeah it has reverb but it intrigues me a lot)
- Hungry Robot Moby Dick (no top mounted  )
- Frayed Knot Marma (no top mounted  )
- 80Tape In Limbo III??

…throw me your ideas! :!!!:

Maybe something will come out at NAMM, but I just don't see much currently that fits your criterion. I could go through a list of 60 delays and none would check all 3 boxes (top jacks, price, narrow enclosure). As you know, about 90% of the compact delays have side jacks.

The slim Aqua Puss has top-mounted jacks, but I'm not sure it's an improvement over the 616 (never used either). Maybe the V2 Wash is your best option.

Yeah i know there isn't much, that's why i'm asking you guys. Forgot about the Earthquaker Space-spiral, which seems to fit everything i'm asking for but it just doesn't have appeal to me :idk:
I wish there was something resonant like the Transmisser but in delay form instead of reverb :whateva:
I could pass over the size thing if it's just slightly bigger than the standard like the Wash V2, or the Avalanche Run V1.

Depending on whether or not you can make the size work for you, DOD Rubberneck meets the other stuff.

It's got a ton of things that are actually quite amazing (length of delay/tails option makes sound on sound/edge of spaceship oscillation on demand possible in analog).

And cheapish.

So this meets none of your requirements, but if you want to downsize to just one delay, the Source Audio Nemesis is great. The Neuro App has let me set it up to have each “voice” exactly tailored like I want it. I’ve currently got a CT5-style in the reverse slot, a runaway RE-20 sound in another, an oil can in another, and so on. It can do crazy, but I think the analog/dirty sounds are head and shoulders above the other all-in-one delay boxes.

Otherwise, I would echo the Rubberneck suggestion.

Korg Dynamic Echo if you can find one. Filters, lofi, resonance, ducking, etc. Top mounted jacks. Not too big. Can jump between surface parameters and one preset.

It would have been my first choice if it wasn't for the size. Actually have been on the point of buying last November but decided to keep the money to make a bigger investment later. I keep it on the list of I don't find anything else that fits.
The fact that it's around 100€ is a big up. ;)

I always preferred to have two different pedals as delays because I make a lot of knobs changes on the fly during concerts and rehearsals, and I like to make them interact one with another so a single pedal wouldn't let me do everything I want. I know the Nemesis is a wonderful machine (and it has presets) but, despite having a lot of features that I love, I just think it's not the thing I need now.

Thinking about a Molecular Distruptor with mainly delay patches, been watching a lot of demos lately and it could satisfy my needs and more (ringolay  ).
I could close my eyes on the price and on the size for this since it does soooo much stuff.

The 616 is still one of my favorite delays, mainly because of the way the repeats are voiced (which is, for me, the essential feature when it comes to delay). Not too bright, not to dark, very warm but cuts in the mix, etc...
So I'm just guessing here, but maybe you like it for the same reasons? I own both the Nemesis and Rubberneck. Not a fan of the Nemesis' repeats, but it does so many things, like a multi-effect, and it goes beyond just being a delay, so it's a compensation! The Rubberneck was a bit of a disappointment though, as I found the repeats lacked personnality (just my opinion here). It's quite tweakable, but still, repeats don't appeal to me...
I would say that if you're looking for a pedal with as much personnality and temper as the 616, maybe the Micro Dream is worth a try (the ED2 sounds so unique). Molecular Disruptor looks great, but it's not really analog, is it?

Yeah I was optioning the Molecular as a second delay for the crazier stuff.
Totally agree on the 616, it just one of those simple pedals that always sounds good. Simply good tone.

Avoid the Rubberneck if:

- You're after a straight forward small analog delay
- You want a digital modeler with a dozen different modes.
- You don't want a tricked out awesome sounding analog delay with tap tempo for a stupid cheap price.

One thing though: it's the first time I had to glance at the manual of an analog delay pedal. The controls are highly interactive. If you don't want the oscillation to go out of control, you'll want to keep the tone/gain controls nicely balanced with the repeats/mix controls. It takes a bit of careful tweeking to get a tasty bed of throbby osscilation underneath the dark murky repeats of what you're playing on top of it...:)

So, just because i found one at a reasonable price, i got to grab a DBA Echo Dream 2.
Size-wise is more than what i wanted but at the same time i have always been really curious about it, anyway probably you'll see it popping up in B/S/T in a few weeks, once i played it properly.
Meanwhile i keep an eye open for a Molecular Disruptor/wait for the next batch. And, in case, the Rubberneck is still pretty easy to find at a decent price, so for the "other" delay i'm settled for now..

The question mark remains for the analog one, the idea of rehousing the 616 with jacks on top keeps coming back to me, but i'd prefer to find a new pedal.
