Octave fuzz fatigue

I don’t mind hearing it but I can’t make octave up fuzz work for me when playing. It’s all about octave down for me. I really liked the El Guapo when I had it and the Foxrox Octron 3 sounds great. It has Up and Down, blended to taste.

FZ-2. Not as much octave as a 'real' superfuzz clone, less spit and sputter too. More gnarl though, it sounds bigger and meaner.

I think I read somewhere it's based on the Beebaa, who knows

Other than that, what I like for octave fuzz...Clusterfuzz with my guitars volume turned halfway down
Sort of a hidden setting I guess, it doesn't even work with all guitars/pups for some reason.

But I mostly use an old dod octoplus in front of the fz-2 or my harmonic percolator clone, or whatever else is on my board. There's plenty of alternatives for the octoplus that track better and have more options, like maybe a pitch fork or something

I like the zvex octane for a kind of superfuzz w moderate octave and lots of useful tones (as opposed to just 2)

Zvex Octane is rad... great for heavy tones. HBE UFO fuzz is another one I love (Home Brew Electronics, Ultimate Fuzz Octave). Neither of these are weird, if you want something weird.

Octron makes another one that looks good, I have no experience with it.

Buzzz is probably my favorite. Superfuzz, Scrambler, velcro, low gain germanium overdrive, all kinds of good stuff in there and lots of options to fiddle with.

Mid-fi Peace Gun can do some pretty cool octave sounds, plus all the gnarly resonant filter tones.

Wolftone Chaos does octave up and envelopey, wave-folding-sounding things, while the Helium does surprisingly clean octave up to Octavia to cracked-out Octavia. Also you can find the Malekko versions super cheap.

It's the fiddling part that kept me from buying a Buzzz. Seeems to do all I want from a superfuzz type pedal, but also a lot more...I'm a set-and-forget kinda guy, I get 'option anxciety' when I'm using a dirt pedal that has more than 3 controls

So if any of the SS/BS peeps are reading this: Build a junior version of the Buzzz please, a condensed version that's easier on our wallets and pedalboard space

you can just tape over everything except the usual superfuzz/standard fuzz controls. aside from being a bit gainier and heavier, the buzzz is just a really good superfuzz with a couple of bells and whistles.

i guess a "buzzz jr" could be a normal fy6 with a couple component changes?? (built from a kit???)

Some interesting suggestions, but I still don't quite get the love for the Boss FZ-2. I tried one years ago and thought it was a decent FY-6 tone, but nothing amazing.

While I love super fuzz clones and I think the Shiva is badass the TZ-2 is still my fave followed by the henretta engineering purple octopus [octavia clone] - into some other fuzzier fuzz

I (also) have an Upper. But despite being like the third pedal I bought, I've used it relatively little. Might be that octave up is not really my cup. Like adamajah I prefer down. For now I use the Parasit Sidescroller, which can blend between both. I enjoy its stable PLL synth sounds, I guess that's what I look for in octavers more than the dynamic, vintage (tempted to say 'stripped of all meat')-sounding ones.

Oh and I built myself a Fuzzhugger Phantom Octave clone, but haven't really played it enough to find out if it suits me. It's definitely different from the abovementioned. Maybe closer to an Octavio. If I remember correctly my buddy had his to contrast with on that rehearsal, and they were on a similar level of brutality, though the Phantom is more.. robotic, industrial? Well it's op-amp/LED clipping as opposed to transistor/transformer/diodes? Haven't looked at the circuit much, might not for a while because of the ongoing downward octave quest.

Having said that I do like guitar notes +1 or 2 octaves flying overhead at strategic moments in songs.. I can't think of any examples but you know what it is. Wanna say power pop is a good place for those sounds, but you might like the jazz, or metal. Not to be overdone, mind you - I don't want my ears sliced off.
