I hated it too. I prefer the Dwarfcraft Hax 2 and Fairfield Randy's Revenge. I couldn't get it to behave if that's your thing.

I bought one and flipped it within 6 weeks. I had a really hard time finding any usable sounds out of it. The knobs did not seem to work intuitively with each other and the slightest adjustment of one kind of threw the whole thing off. I felt like it was more a square wavey distortion than a ring mod. Not for me.

Ring mods I haven’t flipped:
Gonkulator
Minifooger MF Ring
Moogerfooger Ring Mod
Randy’s Revenge

Ditto what the others said regarding the Outer Rings. It's a great noise box, not a great ring mod. I ended up flipping mine. Hoping to grab a Hax 2 soon

Interesting to hear my experience with the Outer Rings was not unique - I was so excited for it but what can you do?

The guy I flipped it to on Reverb (for a fair price of course I’m Canadian) really loved it - he even said so in the feedback he left!!

Bad marketing on Adventure Audio's part.

It's not really a ring mod in a conventional sense and probably shouldn't've been marketed as such.

I wonder how many people would've been happier if they'd've gotten it thinking it was some other type of pedal?

It's definitely a nice noise maker though. :idk: :snax:

Yeah, it's more like a PLL mixed with a XOR logic or a comparator fuzz or something. It's hard to keep it all in balance.

It's ok for what it is...but it wasn't an instant love when I first got it (wrote more about that pages back)

Randy is the real fuckin’ deal my friend.

It was my first Fairfield, now all I can do is think about an Unpleasant Surprise. WITH a Randy’s Revenge.

YES
The most musical ring mod i've ever had.
Too bad i have to sell it because i don't use it often enough to justify his space on the board  .

You'll get another one.

Don't get this one though in the meantime:

Just put up a demo of the Side FX Bug Elektrik ring mod! This is a super tweakable ring mod with 3 modulation speeds (tremolo, low ring mod, and high ring mod), envelope control over the modulation speed, a half time momentary footswitch, switchable waveform, and a nice overdrive to glue it all together :!!!:
Sounds like you can probably place it in the "noise-making ring mod" file. So, for fans of Outer Rings maybe? :snax:

Also, there's a Mike Hermans Hax 2 demo?

He's selling his demo unit:

:whoa: Mike Hermans isn't usually someone I'd associate with ring modulation. :idk:

Sounds like we need a spectrum scale ranging from musical to noisy in which to rate ring mods, or is this a highly subjective question?

I think it's a little less subjective than some of the gear/things we talk about.

I'm sure some people'll wanna bicker over the finer details though. :snax:
