Eventide H9 algorithms
So I've got an H9 Core on the way and have been looking into the different algorithms. I'm going to mess around with the stock H910/H949 to get a good feel for it, but I'll likely end up buying a few more. From what I've read/listened to I'm mainly interested in the Undulator, ModEchoVerb, Blackhole, Diatonic, Pitchfuzz, and MangleVerb. I'm also mainly planning on using this with synths (mostly Sub 37, but might try it out with modular and the DX7 as well)
Rather than necroing the old thread, I figured I'd start a new one to ask: what are people's favourite H9 algorithms? Which would be the first ones you'd buy if you were starting from scratch with a Core?

Re: Eventide H9 algorithms
I've been stuck with Resonator for quite a while.
But Harpeggiator and Looper have my forever love.
Also, make sure to check out new HotSawz, just ignore the cheesy demos and go straight to test it for free.
And yeah, Undulator, I still don't know what is going on with that one but it never disappoints.

Re: Eventide H9 algorithms
The TGP whining about the Eventide pedals is from people who want very whitebread models of very whitebread effects for their very whitebread music. Eventide doesn’t do modeling as such and is wasted on whitebread. Go for the powerful, deep-space and mangling algorithms. Some of the pockets of fold-space might be less obvious to find—check out some of the demos of the Timefactor as a glitch looper, which can do a lot of exotic things in the vein of boutique glitch loopers.

Re: Eventide H9 algorithms
I have a lot of favorite algo's. My favorites are the ones I've tweaked but aside from that I love-
Crushstation-bottom feeder
Blackhole-Nebula
Crystals-Areyouthere (it's a tweaked classic crystals)
Diatonic-Copycat
Quadravox-Good Morning Sun
Ultra Tap-Bouncing Ball (this can be INSANE when used right)
Undulator-Dreamulator
There's a ton more but I love these the most.

Re: Eventide H9 algorithms
Oh shit, I just went on their website and saw that they have a MaxOut special on right now. You can MaxOut the Core with the purchase of 15 algorithms, so I might end up doing that...maybe. It's still a lot of money, but it doesn't even make sense to buy 30 algorithms to max it out normally; in that case, I might as well just sell the H9 and buy a Max. So if I'm ever going to do it, I guess now is the time
Also, I read Jwar's thread about the dangers of the MaxOut program, so I have been warned.
Edit: just saw that 856's are available again tomorrow, so that's where my PayPal money will be going instead. I don't really need 50 algorithms anyway and I can always max it out later if I really want to
I have noticed that almost all of the demos are so ridiculously cringe-worthy. And I really don't understand why they only have guitar and bass demos. To me the H9 makes just as much, if not more, sense as a synth effect than a guitar effect. I honestly have no interest in using it on my guitar board.
Looks like right now (if I don't go for the MaxOut) I'm thinking of getting the Undulator and Blackhole next, then I'll have to look a little deeper to see what else I'd want to get.

I honestly haven't even really looked at the Resonator (because I have a resonator in my modular setup) or the Harpeggiator (because most of my synths have arpeggiators built in), but I'll check those out. I'll check out HotSawz too, but again, not sure if I'll use it as much with synths.tremolo3 wrote:I've been stuck with Resonator for quite a while.

This resonates with me, but I do feel like Eventide's marketing really does target the market looking for "whitebread models of very whitebread effects for their very whitebread music". Eventide needs more demos of people using this pedal to dig deep into the weird side of the effects and less demos of hot blues licks and funky bass. To me, this pedal looks like a perfect platform to experiment with sound. Also, I'm surprised at how many people I saw on other forums suggesting that their favourite/most essential effects on the H9 are things like the wah or rotary or hall verb. I really feel like those people are absolutely using this pedal wrong. This is also why I wanted to ask here and why I like you people so muchGone Fission wrote:The TGP whining about the Eventide pedals is from people who want very whitebread models of very whitebread effects for their very whitebread music. Re: Eventide H9 algorithms
I guess I should not be saying this but don't max that Core, even with the MaxOut program; used Maxs are usually ~$500 and most of the times almost in new condition after said "whitebreads" realize shit's either too complicated or too `digital`.
Unless you want to have that unit in new condition... And If you ever do that (Maxing your Core), you can safely sell it as a Max as long as you pass your account info to the next owner.
Totally agree about the demos, and kinda sad to see it mostly demoed by blues lawyers, most interesting you can find is dawless techno dudes on YouTube. But the unit can do a lot of cray cray stuff, it just needs more exposure.
Also remember you can try out every algorithm for 5 minutes per day, sure might not be enough to decide but it gives you an overall idea.

Re: Eventide H9 algorithms
Totally agree. The H9 gets an unfair reputation because of this. But Eventide could look up from their bongs every once in a while and show people what it can do.MrNovember wrote:This resonates with me, but I do feel like Eventide's marketing really does target the market looking for "whitebread models of very whitebread effects for their very whitebread music". And thanks for the heads up on the maxout deal. I never would’ve known otherwise, and I’m halfway there from my H9 Standard. So I guess I’ll spend the weekend being overwhelmed with option paralysis

Re: Eventide H9 algorithms
Thank you for saying this. I was really tempted to go for the MaxOut right now, but, after thinking about it, I really don't need that many algorithms. I'd rather mess with the H910/H949 now and get a couple more algorithms in a few weeks if I'm getting along with it ok. Then over time I'll likely build up a collection and maybe next time there's an offer I can MaxOut. That way I can hopefully avoid option paralysis, which I actually have encountered with a few multi-effects in the past...tremolo3 wrote:don't max that Core

Also, I didn't realize that it was 5 minutes per day. I thought it was 5 minutes total!

I would just buy a used Maxed out box. You can still find deals sometimes.

So I ended up grabbing the Blackhole, Undulator, and Resonator algorithms. Absolutely loving them so far. Blackhole is even better than I was expecting!

Re: Eventide H9 algorithms
Anyone use it without the app? I think I would hate the menu diving to tweak parameters and I have no interest in being stuck editing via phone or computer. I often lust for another Space, then I think about the H9, then I don't buy either because I get analysis paralysis and just want to take the JonnyAngle approach to reverb and get a spring tank unit, then I just think about buying an Erbe Verb but no space in my rack for it.

Re: Eventide H9 algorithms
The vintage delay is really nice, loved it when i had a timefactor. It gets really dirty and bitcrushy. The multitap is pretty great too but i think eventide has made cooler algos like that for the h9. All pitchfactor algos apart from the synthenizer and octaver are amazing. I love the harmodulator it can get super wonky and warped. I also like playing with the diatonic to get more complicated than i can play...

You can assign the small three buttons to 3 parameters that you edit with the big ass knob.codetocontra wrote:Anyone use it without the app? I think I would hate the menu diving to tweak parameters and I have no interest in being stuck editing via phone or computer.
If you need more editing, you can press the last button (from L to R) and it will scroll through all of them.

Re: Eventide H9 algorithms
Actually, you can assign any parameter to any of the three middle buttons by holding them and then tapping them to scroll through the different parameters. You can use the "hotknob" or whatever it's called to control any number of the parameters at the same time. They call it an expression control. I don't know how to assign parameters to it yet though. So it's definitely possible to use without the app, but the app is surprisingly usefultremolo3 wrote:You can assign the small three buttons to 3 parameters that you edit with the big ass knob.codetocontra wrote:Anyone use it without the app? Re: Eventide H9 algorithms
I don't think you could really go wrong with any of the Space/Timefactor algos. I also like Crystals even though can be cheesy as cheese. Not sure what the functionality on the H9 is like but the looper algorithm on the Timefactor and get pretty glitchy/granular if that's your thing.
