Would you describe the Karaoke Party as "Revolver"y?

Post by CBA »

M'yello.

Just feeling around for overdrive/fuzzes (as opposed to distortion) that have a somewhat Revolver-y sound as in "She Said She Said", "Taxman", and possibly "And Your Bird Can Puke". Is the Karaoke Party like that, or is it more on the overdrive/distortion side? I really like the sound of 60s "fuzz" that is just very light, yet still has an unmistakable fuzz quality.

Yer pal,

C

Karaoke Party to me is more dirt than fuzz. Could probably do some stuff close to Taxman. She Said might be fun to try with something like a Mid Fi Peace Gun!

Ok. I may skip it, then. I just got a 3-knob Singing Tree in a trade that I'm really excited about, so I thought about getting a KP to do a light 60s fuzz... but I don't need one if it's going to be similar to the Singing Tree.

Thanks!

The Beatles used loads of different fuzz boxes -- stomps and built into amps. Last count I saw was 10.
Maestro FZ-1 in 1963ish and a MkI Tone Bender on Rubber Soul.
By 1966, John Lennon had a wedge-shape WEM fuzz pedal I don't know anything about but it looks kinda like a Maestro; Paul McCartney was using a MkII Tone Bender (OC75s maybe?), and George Harrison was most likely using the fuzz built-in the hybrid SS preamp/tube power Vox 7120 amp.
In 1967, they were using Vox 730s and Selmer Zodiak both with built-in fuzz.
In 1968, for the Hey Bulldog/Lady Madonna sessions there's pics with a Vox Conqueror.
On Revolution (1968), John Lennon was running his Casino into the desk (Redd consoles) to overload the preamp and get that fuzz sound.
By 1969, George harrison had a Si Fuzz Face.

All that aside, the Italian Vox 2-trannie V828 Tone Bender sounds pretty close to a lot of those fuzz tones. So does the DAM 1966, which is based on it. Taxman kinda sounds Voxish to me.
Or get a decent MkI Tone Bender for the earlier sounds.

Just my CAD$0.02 worth.

Here's a pic of Sum Yung Guys with a Maestro fuzz tone in 63ish?

Here's the WEM in 1966

This is the Tone Bender that looks suspiciously like the Vox (although I've heard it claimed to be a Mk1.5 TB?)

There was a guy on TGP and the DAM forum a few years ago seemed to know all this stuff -- real Beatles but (OK OK I'm tired: Beatles nut  )I guess. Where I cribbed all that info.

Real Beatles butt? NO WAY!!! :p

Yeah... I'm pretty well-versed in my Beatles lore, but some of this is news to me. Thank you!

A few days ago there was a post about the fuzz on "Hold Tight" by Dave Dee, Bitchy, Titties, & Ron, and I'm still blown away by the D*A*M demo that was posted about halfway down the thread. Good lord... that thing sounds so very very good.

Think I'll just chill for a bit.

Your pal,

C

p.s. Finally read through the whole Mellowtone Electric Apple Saga post... that thing sounds pretty friggin' nice. Maybe that will do me.

The Mr. Men starring Ron Jeremy
There's a great looking book called Recording the Beatles with a lot of info -- not cheap and not available til August, but I might get it.

I know Gary Hurst is claiming the tone bender was one of his Mk1.5s, but he had a vested interest in selling his RI, so who knows.

Funny that he calls the 2-trannie Italian Vox TB a terrible copy: Robby Kruger used one and so did Ron Asheton. It's a really cool and interesting fuzz.

And this is what you need to get the Revolver fuzz tone ..

My experience with the Super Beatles is when they worked they sounded great.
No 2 parts of them seemed to be working at the same time and I remember a lot of smoke.

But if I found 1 I’d buy it. LOL
