I don't have it, yet, just ordered. But, yeah, The Satanist is probably my favorite album of theirs.

YOB's Our Raw Heart won me over this year for sure. I have not had another album impact me like that this year.

Feel like it took you a few spins to latch onto it. Glad you dig that album. I haven’t spun it lately but that is definitely a standout for me this year.Jwar wrote:YOB's Our Raw Heart won me over this year for sure. I have not had another album impact me like that this year.

It did for sure! At first I was like "is this like new hair metal? WTF". Then I actually started listening and ignored my initial reactions. That's happened to me many times. I hated the new Perfect Circle album at first but that goes in the #2 spot for me this year. It's fucking fantastic. Glad I gave it time! I listen to it constantly! I keep thinking I'll burn myself out on it, but it hasn't happened.odontophobia wrote:Feel like it took you a few spins to latch onto it. Glad you dig that album. I love the vocals on that record a lot. But the musicianship is ace. YOB is a top heavy band for me. Definitely one of my favorite albums this year.Jwar wrote:It did for sure! One of the things Apple Music has spoiled me on is the ability to listen to anything anytime. So instead of only having a few gigs worth of music on my phone and managing it and ensuring that I have new records on my phone at all times I’m just listening to whatever is pleasing in that moment. Sometimes I sleep on new albums for awhile.
Case in point, I’m still working through the new High on Fire.

Re: Be(a)st records of the year 2018 edition
back in the 1999-2001 time frame there was a metric fuckton of Autechre-lite IDM being produced. Arovane's Atol Scrap (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VZAIIOu ... 9bNmx0LdLp) springs immediately to mind (he also did a pretty good BoC copy record a couple of years later when that was the trend). Speedy J's Public Energy #1 is an odd cross between Autechre-style abstraction and minimal techno BOOM. like i said, there's a heap of similar stuff out there; this is just what i can remember off-hand.
gotta say that about the only thing that's really interested me this year is the Low album, which i have yet to hear but has been received rapturously...i can't think of a single negative review. still waiting for the MBV EPs. need to check out the new Aphex.

New High on Fire is excellent (because High on Fire is all excellent), as is the new Conan (equally destroying) but for some reason I keep switching to Spacemen 3 after three or four songs.
Which isn't unusual, I guess -- 'cause Spacemen 3 are one of my all time favorites -- but it is a thing.
Anyway! The latest Melting Hand might be up some folks alley:

I feel so out of the loop with all this sludge/stoner/aluminum-necked-guitar thing.

don't say that too loud, or 16-year-old Floridians with facial tattoos will start getting throat inlays. and once it gets popular, you know what that means? the nation's supply of aluminum foil will be decimated as 12-year-olds stick it to their necks.gnomethrone wrote:Have you tried aluminum-necked hiphop?

I felt the same way about the new a perfect circle. The first time I listened to it I didn't know what to think but yr right, it's great! It's probably my favorite album by them.Jwar wrote:It did for sure! At first I was like "is this like new hair metal? WTF". Then I actually started listening and ignored my initial reactions. I haven't dared listen to it after disliking the single quite substantially.
