Using a laptop computer in place of digital stompboxes

Post by MPrado »

Hello all,
I really like Eventide's iconic reverb, chorus, delay, modulation, pitch-shifting effects... I have their bundle plug-ins and I am thinking how to incorporate them to my live guitar rig. The obvious thing to do would be to buy these H9 boxes but I think, why on earth on 2018 not to use the laptop to replace the digital stompboxes? –and then reamped and straight to the amplifier.

I am not concerned at using a laptop because: it's introducing a lot of complexity that can go wrong, , foot controller to control the presets on the laptop, switching from one effect to another, activation key for vst's, looks ugly, whatsoever...

I am concerned with the fact that even with maximum computer horsepower, latency would still be a serious issue. I am concerned as well with the fact that the output of my soundcard (Motu Ultralite) even reamped with a proper box, could entail serious impedance/sound problems when entering the guitar amp (let's say an amp with a big clean headroom), I guess it could be even further problematic if I put a fuzz box between my guitar and the Hi-Imput of the audio interface.

Is this a serious feasible route? Any experiences?
Thanks!

Equipment depending that may not be a huge issue.
Gonna drop a couple links worth perusing.

Rig Rundown for God is an Astronaut, using laptops for stuff on the latest tour. also using axefx.

And here’s an interview taking about Nine Inch Nails using Apple’s Mainstage, a live performance tool.

Thanks so much!
I've seen that rig rundown, but I thought it was mostly in relation with axefx and I really wantto use my own collection of plug-ins

I just used it as a reference for a group using laptops in a live rig. NIN could be more relevant. And I think This Will Destroy You has a MacBook Pro in their live rig for a time.

Didn’t even realize you could use the OMEC Teleport USB to route effects. Lit.

I put mine up on Reverb but I'll make you an even better deal if you decide to go the Teleport way.

I find that with the latest low latency interfaces like the Focusrite Clarett series, the latency really isn't noticeable anymore. That's especially true if you're using it for something like chorus or reverb, since you can use direct monitoring to get absolutely no latency for the dry signal.

Impedance won't be a problem if you set your amp clean, but don't expect sensitive fuzz pedals to handle it well. You'd rarely put those kinds of fuzz pedals after reverb anyway though? More traditional dirt pedals will sound fine after the interface.

Ultimately though you just have to give it a try and see if you like how it sounds or not.
