Re: The Netflix/Hulu/Prime Thread
Rewatched the BSG reboot in the past year and it held up, and final season wasn’t as disappointing the second time around.
Of Netflix Marvel stuff, I thought Luke Cage S2 really stepped it up. A decent social novel packed into a comic book story.
Bojack Horseman S5 is great so far. Trying to pace it so we don’t burn through too fast. (Though we have watched S4 three times and it just got better each time.)

Re: The Netflix/Hulu/Prime Thread
Watched four random episodes of NF's new Norm Macdonald show. Not sure I'm on the wavelength for this. He's interviewing friends from showbiz, but it seems like he's just kind of wasting time on questions that don't really help guests describe who they are and why. Maybe the most revealing thing is this: the guest who seems to be having the worst time on the show and goes out of their way to make sure they look unimpressed with the proceedings, is Letterman. And he's the exec producer.
I thought the most interesting guest would be Lorne Michaels, given their history together. But that one just turned out like Lorne was being interviewed by his teenage son or something...
The episode with Norm's described "best friend" Billy Joe Shaver was probably the most entertaining and insightful. But given that guy's character and history of fuckups, who COULDN'T get a good interview from him?
Maybe the most "holy shit" moment of that episode was when Shaver said that Waylon used the song Billy wrote for him to impress Elvis into a working collaboration, but never told Elvis who wrote the song...basically let him think Waylon wrote it and Elvis never asked. Basically a collaboration with Elvis made small-time country pickers big time, but Shaver was left out of the spotlight until outlaw country historians got to the bottom of it all.
But whatever - maybe if Shaver had become rich from an Elvis collaboration, he would have drugged himself to death before the 80s got here.

I've never understood Norm Macdonald's humor.
It always seemed to me that the funniest thing about him was how he talked and that's about it.

Watched As Above, So Below on Netlfix. Starts off pretty fantastic in spite of some so-so acting/writing and makes use of some interesting ideas for a found footage horror, then throws all its good building up away by the end, imo. Extremely disappointing, but fairly entertaining and probably worth it for the first half alone plus some cool camera/technical tricks along the way, if you're into that sort of thing.
Also watched Scott Pilgrim again for the first time since it came out, and I still hate Michael Cera. Probably the only movie where I've ever rooted for Jason Schwartzman.

Maniac is...interesting.
I feel like it'd be just a bit better without the super recognizable main characters, though.
The Good Cop looks like it might be funny, in a "it's funny because it's not really funny" kind of way.

Re: The Netflix/Hulu/Prime Thread
Just finished season 1 of The Mist. It's a good take on it for sure, but it's almost comical how much they ripped from Ozark. The visual style, the family secrets, one loner chick on drugs character, gay guy turns out a hater, etc. etc. It just goes on and on.

Re: The Netflix/Hulu/Prime Thread
I already want a season 2 of The Good Cop.
It's not great, it's not bad, but it's one of those shows you can just kinda leave on and occasionally look at and it still manages to hold your attention.

Re: The Netflix/Hulu/Prime Thread
Now nearing the conclusion of Battlestar Galactica season 3 and still binging away, though the increased focus on non-Cylon characters and court drama is a bit off-putting. Also hoping that a main character returns soon and guessing based on imdb info she will.

Oh man, S3 was a long one.
I never understood why S4 was viewed so negatively knowing S3 existed.

Maniac is the best show I've seen in years. Jonah Hill was amazing in it, and I've never been a big fan of his.

Yeah, I got really confused in the middle of the show, but the ending was a real payoff.UglyCasanova wrote:Maniac is the best show I've seen in years. Jonah Hill was amazing in it, and I've never been a big fan of his.
It was like a really long indie movie, but that actually made it so much better.
Also, I kinda want a S2 or a sequel or something but I don't know how that would work since it would be completely different than the first season.
